6538b has had a Pearl Very Light Gray photo for a little while now, and the part in the photo certainly looks like said color. I have finally found PCCs 4169194 and 4177082 for part 6538b in Pearl Very Light Gray.
Pearly Silver colors are known to display lots of variation, but I believe the part in the photo is light enough to be this color.
I went through a few Brickset inventories containing 6538, and this set did not even have one in Pearl Light Gray. The LEGO customer service replacement parts page doesn't have ANY parts available in TLG 150 Light Gray Metallic, meaning that Brickset more than likely wouldn't. It doesn't have any TLG 150 items on it. The absence of a 6538 in any silver color in the 8010 inventory suggests that this set came with a Pearl Very Light Gray axle connector piece. It would have had a Pearl Light Gray piece if it was in the set's most recent release, which it doesn't.

My new sealed set contained a Pearl Very Light Gray connector.
