Staring at it, and also reviewing some of the humorous take offs on reddit, got
me to thinking ... Are there enough LEGO color shades of gray to make a version
that fades from black on one side to white on the other ? It would require a
total of 11 colors, so white and black on the outer edges, then 9 shades between
them. Without going into the old grays, I don't think it could be done. Anyone
have any ideas on how to make this work ?

Nah, it couldn't by far. I collect monochrome figs, and there are only 6
available in shades of gray (Black, Dark Gray, Dark Bluish Gray, Light Gray,
Light Bluish Gray, White).

The other three colors I can think of are Pearl Light Gray, Flat silver, and
Dark Gray. As you said, minifigures don't come in those shades, but there
are armor pieces and helmets that do, along with decorated legs that come in
flat silver and pearl dark gray. If they used a different shade of gray for the
torso and head, I don't think it would look too bad.
But then you have the problem of finding the basic pieces in those colors for
the base and wall, which very well could be impossible.

Ackshually, there are two other official greys - very light grey and very light
bluish grey
But good luck getting usefull parts in that colour

Make it 4, 8, or 12 wide with a single, double, triple width of the colors (B,
DBG, LBG, W)

What about Trans Clear & Trans Black ? I saw minifigs in these colors.

That might work. Note that I'm only searching for the figs, bits and pieces
to do black, while plus nine in-between. I have not even considered approaching
the half-century mark, as that would cause much strain on the topic, and that
many shades of gray are not even remotely possible.
