Based on information provided in the request at https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1144809 and many other sealed set contents that I found, I don't think this set ever came with a 50cm string. All of the sets that I see show a 100cm string as early as August 2012, which would have been one of the first sets produced (the set was released that summer). The 100cm string was added as an alternate in January 2013, which would still have been early in the production cycle. Since the original inventory was done from the Parts List and the PCC in the instruction manuals currently points to both the 50cm and 100cm strings, I think it is almost without a doubt that this set always had a 100cm string based on the evidence.
