About all your today requests about changing automaticlly all undetermined tap
when the other in alternate has second known variant. It not so simple. That
is why 4599 was split to two distinct entris and not only second entry without
a hole created and original one changed to with hole. The reason among others
also was to check mistakes in inventories about this part attachment. If it was
so simple 4599 would be simply changed to "a" variant" by name and number change
and then all inventories under it would have still this vartiant now.

Maybe I fail to understand the history of this part, but using logic, in the
change log for this set

Set No: 9463 Name: The Werewolf
*
9463-1 (Inv) The Werewolf
236 Parts, 2 Minifigures, 2012
Sets: Monster Fighters
some months after the initial inventory, on
Aug 7, 2012, Randy F, added

Part No: 4599b Name: Tap 1 x 1 without Hole in Nozzle End
*
4599b Tap 1 x 1 without Hole in Nozzle End
Parts: Tap
as an alternate, is this not evidence that
both styles of taps were found?

*
4599b Tap 1 x 1 without Hole in Nozzle End

Not necessarily.

Part No: 4599a Name: Tap 1 x 1 with Hole in Nozzle End
*
4599a Tap 1 x 1 with Hole in Nozzle End
Parts: Tap
was added on Jul 14, 2016 so 4 years after Randy change
request. So before that we were having in catalog part 4599 which supposed to
be with hole (now undetermined) and b variant (added in 2009) only. But not having
two distinctly and correctly described molds could be mistakes in inventories
about old one. That is why procedure is to create new distinct variant and then
move from undetermined to new created variant by checking inventories. We didn't
move as you see all from 4599 to 4599a automatically. Similar procedure was with
this part and its variants:

Part No: 3794 Name: Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with 1 Stud, Jumper (Undetermined Type)
*
3794 Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with 1 Stud, Jumper (Undetermined Type)
Parts: Plate, Modified
and recently for this one:

Part No: 44567 Name: Hinge Plate 1 x 2 Locking with 1 Finger on Side (Undetermined Type)
*
44567 Hinge Plate 1 x 2 Locking with 1 Finger on Side (Undetermined Type)
Parts: Hinge
in this case was mess in invetories with recognizing former "b" variant
(now changed to "a") which was for a year in the catalog and only found in 11
sets till "a" variant wasn't create (now "b" variant). See also here https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1103684
Than thanks to crating distinct variant without a groove it occurs that former
"b" variant with groove is older one and it is in more sets inventories.

There of course are exceptions when we move automaticly undetermined variant
to the correct one when it is proven that second one didn't occur in this
period of time and this is the only one possible for this period. Sets left with
undetermined are from transition period (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012). So should be
checked if it possible that they had both variants. For now 4599 has last year
of occurence 2011 and it is only two sets confirmed. 2010 only three sets confirmed
by heaving "a". So that is why we can't assume that if very long time ago
when they weren't properly recognize they had for sure "a" variant. Especilly
when "a" variant disappearing (years 2011 and 2012) so it is very important to
have it confirmed from some other reliable sources than "it was before in the
catalog so should be changed" to have this dates when the parts variant occur
true.

Similar situation is with 3794, we have changed these easy ones, now left these
from transition period of variants (2010-2014). Some from this period were already
checked by users in their collection and changed.

I hope this is more clear for you now

I agree with Marek that the remaining sets with undetermined entries should be
individually checked before changes are made. I've checked three of them
today and submitted change requests. If we know with a reasonable degree of
confidence (meaning multiple sealed sources) that one specific variant came in
a set, then I see no problem with saying that's the variant which came in
the set and removing the undetermined entry.

People can still add the other variant in later if they find it in sealed sets.
None of your pending requests were approved because of the reasons Marek gave
and because their pending status prevents people from correcting these inventories.

If you'd like to check the inventories of the remaining sets, then please
feel free to do so and submit change requests based on what you find. I've
given three examples of how to do so. The sources I used were YouTube, Eurobricks,
and Brickshelf.

If it turns out that

Part No: 4599b Name: Tap 1 x 1 without Hole in Nozzle End
*
4599b Tap 1 x 1 without Hole in Nozzle End
Parts: Tap
was never in set

Set No: 9463 Name: The Werewolf
*
9463-1 (Inv) The Werewolf
236 Parts, 2 Minifigures, 2012
Sets: Monster Fighters
how will we ever 'prove'
what to do with undetermined

Part No: 4599 Name: Tap 1 x 1 (Undetermined Type)
*
4599 Tap 1 x 1 (Undetermined Type)
Parts: Tap
Marked for Deletion
since there is only two variations and

Part No: 4599a Name: Tap 1 x 1 with Hole in Nozzle End
*
4599a Tap 1 x 1 with Hole in Nozzle End
Parts: Tap
is already included in the set inventory. This would mean we are trying
to prove a negative.

*
4599a Tap 1 x 1 with Hole in Nozzle End

Part No: 4599a Name: Tap 1 x 1 with Hole in Nozzle End
*
4599a Tap 1 x 1 with Hole in Nozzle End
Parts: Tap
is not in inventory for now in this set

Part No: 4599 Name: Tap 1 x 1 (Undetermined Type)
*
4599 Tap 1 x 1 (Undetermined Type)
Parts: Tap
Marked for Deletion
is in inventory for this set

4599 does not equal 4599a. 4599a was crate to correct possible mistakes in inventories
with 4599 and listings for sale.

let see this, it was proven by a member that he had in this set "b" variant (confirmed
from Sealed Set Contents). Set was orginally inventoried with 4599 because distinct
"a" variant wasn't yet in the catalog in this time. We now don't know
after these years for sure if the person who inventoried this really found this
part with hole or wasn't aware of variants of this part. Maybe this set had
only "b" variant because in years 2010-2011 or 2012 was the end of production
of this variant?. So we wait if sombody had really "a" variant in this set and
confirm this.

As I said it can't be done automaticlly without checking in variants transition
period because we don't want to repeat possible mistakes which could be in
inventories when parts hadn't disctinct variants entries. That is why this
whole procedure.

I'm still confused why the current inventory keeps the undetermined variant
as regular, and the 'b' variant as an alternate. If the 'b' variant
has been verified, why isn't it 'regular' instead of 'alternate'?

That is the way it works in this procedure of sorting variants after adding distinct
ones.
It is like a "flag" - this set was inventoried originaly with part which could
be "a" variant but this must be checked.
We can't switch "b" variant in this case to regular and undetermined to alternate
because someone else not the person who originaly inventoried this set found
"b" variant in the set and "b" was already as an alternate when "a" was added
to the catalog. We don't know now if original submiter had "b" variant and
this set was inventoried from Sealed Set Content.
