Suggestion: only moderators can change the subject line.
The past couple of weeks I noticed that some posters in the forum frequently
change the subject line. This is not a good thing. For instance:
The original post was: "Does this qualify for an NSS". But then somebody changed
it to "Seller does not respond".
This is very confusing for anybody and especially for new users.

I agree. "Instant Checkout" started as something else as well. Don't we
have forum moderators any more?

I don't understand what makes it confusing.
If the topic of a new message is different than it was before, it makes sense
to change the subject line. And if a message is a reply to a previous message,
it makes sense for it to be threaded properly.
But no one knows the history. Yes, the old forum users would probably know what
they were posting to, but new users don't know anything about this.

1) What difference does it make if a new user doesn't know what happened
12 messages prior in a discussion that changed enough that someone thought they
should change the subject line?
2) They can easily see the history by scrolling down on any message.

For an innocent derailment, sure. But most of the time that "feature" is used
by someone to argue their point. Better to let a mod keep an eye on things and
change the title when relevant.

I think a lot of people take it literally. There are many MANY posts where someone
starts a thread and then later replies to it with something like "This did not
go where I wanted it to" or "please focus on the original topic" or something
similar.
A lot of people who start a discussion feel that they have some sort of ownership
of the thread. They simply don't.

I agree mostly with Marc. I don't see how this is such a big problem. In
fact, I personally think it keeps the discussion more organized because it better
highlights when a discussion goes off on a tangent. And if someone is doing it
to bother someone else, hold him or her to account rather than denying this to
everyone.
Furthermore, the Discussion Forum Rules do not prohibit changing the subject
line. In fact, they say nothing about the subject line at all. So why would a
mod need to get involved?

temporal causality.

Fair suggestion.
Sorry I felt it was ironically funny to change the subject title for this thread.
It seems strange that even the "Re:" component can be removed from a title if
it is still a response to another message.
Why not just make a completely different thread if you want to change the subject?
That is why I sort of agree with this.
Only sort of because it becomes its on subthread that is still related to the
main thread and people can enter that new related subthread if they like to or

The past couple of weeks I noticed that some posters in the forum frequently
change the subject line. This is not a good thing. For instance:
The original post was: "Does this qualify for an NSS". But then somebody changed
it to "Seller does not respond".
This is very confusing for anybody and especially for new users.
Agreed, it's harder to keep track of replies even if you know how the system
works.
Lol. This thread is almost guaranteed to end up with the most subject changes
of any discussion in BrickLink history.

Honestly though I don't see it as a problem. If the whole conversation has
changed then why not the topic. And I don't think it happens that much to
worry about it at all. Once or twice here and there. But most times its stays
the same or someone adds a extra word or 2 to it. There are way bigger things
that need addressed on here before this would even be considered to be put on
a waiting list to me.
I tried to think of funny one-liners for the subject line, but except for the
above, all the good ones were too long:
I just read that 4,153,237 people got married last year. Not to cause any trouble,
but shouldn't that be an even number?
No, why should it be an even number?
There are Mormons in the USA, the believe and practice polygamie.
Also, person A could marry person B, get a divorce (or be widowed), and remarry
to person C. Three people married (at various times), no polygamy necessary.

Polygamy does sound like fun.
Here is one more:
Women can fake orgasms, men can fake entire relationships.
Or one of my favorites, "If guns kill people, pencils misspell words." Which
leads to a quote by Andrew Johnson "It is a damn poor mind that can think of
only one way to spell a word."
