How about instead of a simple check box with a bullet saying "I am at least 18
years old", we can instead place type in text boxes of: Day (2 digit type in)
- Month (2 digit type in) - Year (4 digit type in)

So for example a new member would have to type in their B-day:
Day [11] Month [9] Year [1990]

If the numbers calculate to less than at least 18 years of the current date,
then that new member gets rejected.

Being that BrickLink is for 18 years and older, then it should also have New
Member Age Verifcation systems that... other types of websites intended for 18
years and older have!

Sorry, but what's to stop someone from just filling in false numbers, just to
bypass the age check?

Those false numbers would need to add up to more than 18 years old... Plus it
looks more serious than a simple check box. Surely, you understand that its more
than just a little math work.

True, I suppose if you can intimidate them, it may then act as a discouragement.

I think BrickLink should do something similar to what Facebook does, where they
ask the user's age (not stating that the user must be 18+ except in the TOS).
If they enter their honest age, the system should throw an error to them and
set a cookie so that they can't try to sign up again.

Chances are that it's a personal computer so it won't deter other members who
might use that computer. Also, there's a very good chance that the kid wouldn't
be tech-savvy enough to just use another browser or clear their cookies.

Voted no. IMO this might just be something that puts off a number of new members
as date of birth information is personal and can be used in fraudulent ways,
if they don't trust the site, it is a reason not to join. We have so few problems
on this site that can be just attributed to age that I don't see why we need
to demand this information and cost the site money to do checks.

I would not have joined this site if I had to have given my date of birth and/or
other personal information because (then) I did not understand the site as I
do now and would have wondered what they wanted the information for. I only "trusted"
the site after getting to know it more. As a buyer I thought I was placing my
trust with the sellers I bought from and my Paypal account (backed up by bank,
credit card, etc) was enough for them to trust me.

This forum sometimes gives the impression that a lot of sellers here don't trust
new buyers. It's a bit like having a store and saying "because one of the last
1000 customers stole something, we will search your pockets when you leave".
Instead we should be giving the new buyers reason to trust us.

Sellers have to take some responsibility for their own security. The site cannot
verify every buyer for them, most buyers come here genuinely to buy Lego, crooks
will find a way to get round any registration checks leaving them as annoying
red tape for everyone else.

If we were discussing some sort of "security bond" for new members who instantly
want to become sellers then that might be a good thing.

Agree. I had many under 10 FB buyers lately without any problem. Often they
are even more communicative than experienced members. And mostly fast to pay
and trying to do everything in the right way (only problem is leaving FB, but
as once said before, I think it's a problem of clicking the preview button instead
of the submit button).

More problems with some high fb sellers who seem to think that rules are not
made for them but only for their buyers. I'll finally have to file NPB for a
nearly 4000 fb member (no payment for a small order, no reaction, no communication),
and just saw that somebody else filed NPB too.
