People just use bastardized variations of the words to get past filters anyway.
Then I've experienced stupid censoring sites where "cockpit" became "****pit."
I realize you said it'd go to review, not just automatically censored, but really
- how many words and variations can you filter before stupid stuff like that
happens?
I'd prefer if people just got a grip... they're only words. I don't know how,
as rational adults, a word so arbitrarily becomes "offensive" when you can use
all the alternates and nobody cares... poop, dung, steaming pile of excrement...
Offense at some of these words makes no sense to me - I don't use them simply
because others find them offensive, but I've never understood why.

Words only have the power you give them. Call me what you want, if your opinion
doesn't matter to me then your words don't matter to me.
That may be a quick and dirty way to ban certain words from appearing in the
forum.
I heard of that on other places.
Any message with a banned word was put into a review before public post section.
Thank you, and good luck with the arguments!
Whilst I agree that anyone could write a list of borderline words that may or
may not be considered appropriate depending upon the background of the reader
and that direct clarification may be beneficial to a minority who seem to lack
judgement, it really ultimately shouldnt be necessary.
My advice is straight forward: Yes, members must be 18 or over, BUT many members
have young children who peer over shoulders and as such please use a bit of common
sense and refrain from using any words that you do not hear on mainstream television
shows aimed at 4-8 year olds.
In the rare event that a curseword is absolutely necessary to get correct context,
for example quoting a message from a member when seeking advice on dispute resolution;
then star it out in its entirety or use an entirely innoffensive alternative.
Also remember that an innocent word used in a manner intended to be offensive
or derogatory to another member or group within society as a whole will be considered
for cancellation and/or punishment.

Voted No.
From the Discussion Forum Rules:
#4 No foul language.
If someone is incapable of understanding or controlling their own language in
accordance with the rules, they don't deserve to be able to post in the forum.

I voted "NO".
Too many languages, and too many different ways to use words, it can get very
complex.
Most people know what language is considered "foul".
What I might like to see is a place where posts that get people banned are posted,
as examples of what not to do.
Names could be removed.
If nothing else, it would give me data to use to form any view I might have as
to the fairness or lack of fairness of the current bans.
Not that it matters what I think, to anyone besides myself.
But without the data, it is hard to have much of an opinion.
It's not going to be practical. For example on one forum the word "drape" is
constantly censored because of the word rape. And cockpit would end up missing
the first half of the word. The word bypass would get cut off to byp or byp***
There are too many legitimate words that could contain swear word inside, and
filtering them would end up looking messy.
Plus there are too many way to c-e-n-s-o-r b'y'p'a's's w,o,r,d,s and even using
non English lettering or symbols to spell words like @ and a pair of $ to spell
a typically vulgar 3 letter words for one's back side.
I don't think there's enough forum traffic here to warrant auto bad word filtering.
We can still report deliberate swearing, and moderator could correct inadvertent
typos, such as my favorite when someone tried to type "shut up" but typed an
i in place of the first u by accident.
I may be naive, but I am under the impression some sort of filter already exists
behind-the-scenes. That is, an "alert" pops up somewhere for Catmin to investigate
a forum post - and this happens without us ever noticing it.
Example: A while back someone wrote something like "Our American president is
lazy and clueless." That post stayed awhile. So I replied, essentially, "F-U."
Then BLAMMO! Entire thread canceled - thank you very much. I suspect my vulgar
reply generated the quick response.
But then again, maybe it was just coincidence and I'm being naive?

Nothing is automatic. We rely on mods reading posts, and on other members reporting
problems.

It was most likely just a coincidence as there is no automatic notification.
The likely scenario is that things like vulgar language are easy to spot and
report, and some alert member quickly reported your post. When a mod came to
investigate said report, they noticed the previous post as well and canceled
the entire thread.
What about an optional filter that you can check or uncheck in your settings
to either show, or not show these specific kinds of words for those that are
worried about children "peering over shoulders", considering this is an adult
site. I have a hard time censoring myself, because where I was raised, those
words are commonplace, and I do find myself using them inadvertently, from time
to time, usually when I'm excited about something. Just saying, adults should
be able to handle these words, so I wouldn't see need for a censor, but the fact
that some people can't keep kids eyes from wandering, and feel a need to protect
them from that, then perhaps something like this should be in place for those
people.
