Is there any way that bricklink can make sure that the seller has a color selected
before adding an item to their store.

I agree. The only parts I can think of that should have a Not Applicable color
is stickers and assemblies.

I have gotten a couple of orders with parts with no color associated with it
when there should be for example wedge plate.
