Hello to all the people who upload pictures to this site.

I have sat by and watched as people complain about usage of their photos on other
sites.

I cannot imagine it would take more then a few minutes per month for a program
to add watermarks to each and every photo on the BL system.

Would anyone have such a program?

If so please tell the MODs or Admin of this site.

This is an issue that came up with me when I opened the points site for my sale
on this site.

I had people theaten me with legal action over my support site to my BL sales
site.

Thank you for the consideration!

We are going to purchase this software to do ours!

Hope this site does the same.

Thank you, and I hope this helps!

Auto watermarking with the submitters username

In principle I support an option to do so, but it must be an option, because
I would not want my username attached to stock photos from lego that I may have
submitted to prove existance of an item before I take delivery or in some cases
items I dont want to purchase, but also because for some items, because the stock
photos are very good.

I think it should be a relatively simple thing to implement from a general coding
thing for the option part and could be presented to the submitter in a similar
fashion to the do you want the system to resize it thing, the question is that
sort of software to auto-watermark the pictures, does it pre-exist or would Admin
need to write it?

No, I dont think this would be a good use of Admins time, however if a auto bit
of software at the submission phase was brought in, people could always resubmit
photos if they wanted a watermark adding by said software.

We've discussed this several times before at length... a lot of folks were NOT
in favor of images with watermarks... and some were in favor. And yes the issue
got very ugly here on the Bricklink forum... but it died off (eventually) with
no action taken.

Many of the images here on Bricklink are also shared by both LUGNET and PEERON.

The Bricklink Admins have enough to do already, and likely will not become involved
with policing image issues.

I also know that there are quite a few images here on Bricklink with "that little
camera watermark" in the lower right of the image. Getting into watermark issues
opens up that whole other can-o-worms...

I know exactly what you mean.

This is not an issue for us! But it has been.

I was personally attacked due to my use of a BL image to show free sets I gave
away with a promotion.

Was not nice at all.

I totally understand what you are saying.

What my point is that some people who want to claim pictures on this and other
sites need to put a mark on those pictures!

I figured it would be much easier for a catalog Admin to do a bulk batch mark
vs. each person doing one at a time.

I would be glad to add them to the pics if someone trains me on how to do so!

I am going to purchase the package tomorrow and learn how to batch mark pics!

Just do not want any future issues, trying my best to address each one as I begin
my transformation into a self standing business.

Yawn... No, you were not "personally attacked". At least not here in the BrickLink
forum. You were accused of commercially using pictures that you did not own or
take yourself. If you do something which is legitimately questioned by others
- such as using another's copyrighted work for your own commercial use without
their permission or filling customs forms out incorrectly by under-declaring
the value of merchandise purchased from you - that is NOT a "personal attack",
particularly when the accusations have much merit to them.

No, a personal attack would be if someone posted something like this:

http://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=502914

That does sound like a personal attack.

You should have complained and had it removed.

I am killing it now.

Yes, I was personally attacked. One of the forum people called the police on
me.

They got a kick out of it like I did.

Slander is a personal attack. And there are legal remedies for that as well.

They have the phone number of the person who is making false claims at the police
station.

Up to them to act. I put in my report.

I vote NO.

I realize (as usual) I am alone on one side of the debate. But I am very against
this. Let me count the ways...

1) Too much work. BL is already labor-intensive, for admins, catmins, moderators,
and those who upload. Watermarking would be a major undertaking to add on.

2) Not worth it. You can argue "intellectual property rights" all you want,
but at the end of the day, who cares?

3) Won't benefit BrickLink. There's simply *NO* competition website for BrickLink.
So the "benefit" would be only in your mind, not in anybody's pocketbook.

4) LEGO images. Let's be honest here, people. We all know BL contains a boatload
of LEGO images. Any automated system on BL's end would be blindly watermarking
- taking ownership - of images it does not own.

5) Community. You want Peeron and other "friend" sites to use the images? Watermarking
kills this.

6) Appearances. I just don't want to look at a bunch of watermarks. BrickLink
is a seriously image-heavy site. While the purpose of BL is buy and sell, the
real-life daily use of BL is staring at images. I'd find them very annoying.

7) Blocking the subject. With all of BL's thumbnail images, I can't imagine
watermarks not getting in the way of business. When I look up a 2x2 plate modified
- where is the watermark going to be placed? If it's in the corner of the image,
then it's pointless. If it's over the 2x2 modified plate, then it's hindering
my use of BrickLink.

8) Past ownership. Now, I personally have uploaded only 1 image ever. But I
really don't want my one image watermarked. Think about the BL user who has
uploaded 800 images, and is happy with them. How is that person going to feel
when those images, years later, are watermarked? If there was a "watermarking
rule" at the time of upload, then a user had the choice. I'd be irked, personally.

I never read any past threads about this subject. So I apologize if I repeated
others.

Todd

Well, for once in a long while Todd and I are exacly in line with each other
on a contriversal topic. The only difference is that I've uploaded thousands
of images to Bricklink.
Since I run most of my images through Photoshop for correction before uploading
it would take 2 clicks to watermark everything, but it's better not to for the
reasons Todd described above.

Marc.

I am as well.

Just using the watermark to end the endless debate would be nice.

I am sick to death of people telling me that I am using their photos/images/likeness
when I was doing shirts!

It was a professional pain in the neck! And one which I disproved time and time
again!

Just a tool which some use to annoy people.

Funny too, started again here! Guess I had a flashback!

Sorry to bring it up. Just thought it would put an end to the problem!

I should have known it would grow into yet another issue.

So let me restate the suggestion;

I think ANYONE who wishes to claim ownership of the photos on the site known
as Bricklink should watermark their pictures.

There. Will that be a better way to state it?

I have a suggestion, Jon. Focus on one thread at a time. I know that you're not
the only person who does this (I've even taken part once in a while myself),
but it really does help to dampen the flames: don't bring up previous issues
issues in new discussions.

I don't mean that you shouldn't raise issues that have been raised before --
that is fine. What I mean is, if this current discussion is about the usefulness
of watermarks, let it be about that, instead of saying that the last time this
was discussed, somebody declared themselves the copyright police, and somebody
else said your forum picture is mean looking, and somebody else said that your
name is actually Dan.

Let's just talk about watermarks. If the topic happens to spread naturally, let
it. But let's not deliberately dig up corpses.

  So let me restate the suggestion;

I think ANYONE who wishes to claim ownership of the photos on the site known

It may be a better way to state it, but I would still be against it. I'm against
watermarks, not on some moral grounds, but purely for purely aesthetic reasons.
Watermarks are ugly. And, if they're beside the area of the image that shows
the part, they can easily cut out of a copy (defeating their purpose), but if
they are overtop of the part or minifig, then they are obscuring the thing
I actually want to see, which defeats the purpose of having the image.

I do claim ownership of the images that I actually own the copyright to. Do I
feel that those images are very valuable? Nope. But what little value they have,
I own. I doubt that I would have a problem with people using my images for their
own purposes. On the other hand, if someone used my images in a way that I didn't
like, and without my permission, I totally grant that future-hypothetical me
the right to get all indignant and huffy. (And he can totally tell people to
stop their infringing use of the images.)
