| I have only a couple times ever sold sets on here, so this function may already
be implemented. If a seller has a set listed on bricklink, and someone does an
edit to the inventory of that set, can the seller be notified? That way if a
buyer purchases the set, he would not be missing a piece, etc if something was
changed after the set was listed.
Thanks,
Andy

Andy,
This is a great suggestion. It would also be great if sellers who have parted
out the set could be notified. It is a little more complicated than just looking
up which sellers currently have the set listed for sale since it would require
that Bricklink retains a list of sellers who have parted out a set.

... or you could implement a feature that requires that a seller signs explicitly
up for event notification (inventory changed) for a specific set. Just a thought.

Hi,
I voted NO.
I assume that each responsible seller always builds the set according to the
building instructions to verify whether it is complete or not. So there can't
be missing pieces, right?
Of course rumors are going that some very few sellers only compare their pieces
with the inventories, but since BrickLink inventories should be only used as
a guide - as stated on every inventory page - this would be questionable anyway.
In addition, no change notifier could guarantee that an inventory would be correct
then.

So you are calling me an irresponsible seller because I rely on the BL set inventory.
I have never built a set to verify and have just trusted a BL inv. Out of 100+
or so used sets sold there has been Only 1 instance of missing parts (a large
bionicle set did not have the long pins inventoried).Simple solution was to ship
them out as soon as the buyer found the issue.
I also recheck the inventory on used sets at time of shipping to catch any possible
inv. changes since I listed and sold it.

So when I'm going to buy this set from your store
http://www.bricklink.com/store.asp?sID=45108&itemID=3866441
you will find out at time of shipping that it's missing a complete version of
in light gray as this part was added to the inventory AFTER you added the set
to your store. At time of listing in your store the inventory only contained
Acording to your procedures then I either would have to wait on my order until
you get the missing part from somewhere or you would "simply" wait until I will
find the issue?
Great ideas

You may assume that, but not everyone will.
*I* would assume that the set was verified against the inventory.
Either way can be wrong, as even the instructions can be incorrect.

I voted yes too. And not just for sets. Yesterday and today one of the catmins
posted how they were thinking to change the inventories of the S4C ice skater
and hockey player minifigures to include the skates. I listed these minifigures
without the skates as the catalog now says. The skates were listed separately
(and most have already sold). It would cause problems for me and other sellers
and buyers if the inventories of these minifigures were changed to include the
skates and we weren't notified about it.
|
I don't think that's how that change would work, with the minifigs. I believe
that the existing listings would stand, and a new minifig listing would be created,
with the skates. The skate-less version would be marked for deletion, but any
existing listings would persist.
In any case, the original suggestion is a good one. I have sold a set that was
affected by precisely this problem. I bought the set used off ebay, checked the
parts against the inventory, bought the missing parts here on BrickLink, and
listed the set as Used|Complete. A couple of months later, the set sold, I did
a doublecheck of the inventory before packing it, and I was missing parts. This
was not a feeling I want to have again.

Marc is right, if we make a definitional change to a catalog item, we generally
either have to mark the current entry for deletion and create a fresh entry,
or, if there are only a small number of listings, we notify each seller individually
via the BL messaging system that we are changing the item.
Regarding the original suggestion, in the past Admin has always been against
anything that may be perceived as spamming, I suspect partly philosophically,
but also because the volume of BL emails going out in the past caused some internet
providers to label emails from BL as spam. This is why, where catalog changes
are involved, we suggest you check the change log periodically. In the same
vein, it might not be a bad idea to check the inventory change log from time
to time.

I did an analysis of this once as to how many emails would need to be sent if
this feature were implemented. It came out to about a dozen every day. There
is no need for every Inv Change Request to generate a separate email for every
active seller on BL. Consider the following filters:
1) Only sellers who subscribe to the service
2) Only sellers who have listed the set in USED COMPLETE condition
3) Only changes to Regular items (no Counterparts, Alternates, or Extras)
4) Only approved changes
If email volume concerns are still a problem, additional measures may include:
5) Sent only once per week (combined into one email)
6) Added to new listings notification emails when possible
7) Option to send only within the BL message system
8) Option to use a flag system instead, viewable in the seller's store
As for the logs, I believe more people would read them if they were personally
reminded about important changes. As a result, there would be more people involved
in the whole inventory process, and IMO that would be a good thing.
