I’m a casual LEGO collector, by which I mean a person who builds the sets for personal enjoyment as opposed to an investor who buys LEGO products to later resell at a profit.

Currently my main interest is in the expert-level Technic cars and some Star Wars Ultimate Collector Series sets; I’d also like to build a couple BrickVault Star Wars MOCs and several Gundam-inspired mechs of my own design.

Recently I have become unexpectedly interested in the current Star Wars polybag sets, I think it’s interesting to see how LEGO interprets the designs at a small scale which of course requires a more abstract level of detail. I also hope these sets will expose me to new elements that I will be able to use for my mech MOCs.

Of the LEGO sets I’ve purchased this year, I’m most excited to build (listed from lowest to highest level of excitement):

3. 42096 Jakku Quadjumper (launch year 2017 AD.) I was very impressed by Jang’s comment that after building this he thought it was one of the nicest looking models LEGO has made (Jang’s Comment on Jakku Quadjumper), I personally like the design of the vehicle and agree that LEGO’s interpretation is very nicely done. The 75140 Resistance Troop Transporter (launch year 2016 AD) was a contender for the Number 3 spot based on Jang’s high praise for the build experience (Jang’s Praise for Resistance Troop Transporter Build Experience).

2. 75181 Y-Wing Starfighter (launch year 2018 AD.) This is definitely one of my favorite Star Wars vehicles, the LEGO model is a great rendition of the ship. The greebling is of special interest to me, hopefully building the model will give me some insight as to how I can incorporate that into my own designs. It is no surprise to me that Jang also speaks very highly of this model (Jang’s Praise for UCS Y-Wing Starfighter). The 75060 Slave 1 (launch year 2015 AD) was a contender for the Number 2 spot based mostly on that also being one of my favorite Star Wars vehicles and how I think the model is such a good representation of the vehicle. I decided to buy this model after watching BrickLinker Nannan’s review of the model at BrickCon 2014 AD Nannan Reviews UCS Slave 1 at BrickCon 2014.

1. 4888 Ocean Odyssey (LEGO Creator, launch year 2005 AD.) Hands down, without hesitation, this is the set I’m most excited to build. To me this set is amazing, the epitome of creativity, an 11-in-1 set with five Quick Builds, four Experienced Builds, and two Advanced Builds - then three Ideas on top of that! One thing that especially impresses me is the quality of design of all the builds, even the smaller ones. Every build is quite solid, what I would call a “mature” design based on the level of refinement each build embodies; this is demonstrated even more so by the Quick and Experienced Builds which use a limited number of elements in the set but are still very well developed. This set is the last I’ll build of the sets waiting to be built - saving the best for last!
