This project started with my passion for LEGO trains and one simple question: is it possible to create a complete, feature-packed railway diorama that doesn't necessarily require a large space to display?

Railway models often need length, and display space can quickly become a problem. That's where the main idea behind this project came from: to create a small railway world that can change its shape.

In its compact configuration, the two modules sit side by side, creating a self-contained scene with parallel tracks that's ideal for display. By separating and rotating them, the diorama can instead be extended into a linear configuration, making it suitable for a shelf or console while also allowing it to become part of a larger railway layout.

But its transformation is only one of the features to discover.

At the heart of the train is a small industrial-inspired shunting locomotive, designed to accommodate a Power Functions motor mounted vertically inside the body. The Powered Up hub is instead housed inside the adjacent freight car. This solution allowed me to distribute the motorization components across the train without compromising the proportions or appearance of the locomotive.

The same freight car also features one of my favourite building solutions in the project. Its large loading doors actually slide, thanks to a mechanism that uses the small steering wheels normally found in LEGO City cars as an NPU (Non-Conventional Part Use), turning them into functional elements of the door-opening system.

A second freight car, designed to carry large industrial coils, completes the small freight train.

The surrounding railway environment also includes functions and details to discover. The buffer stop features a working spring-loaded mechanism, while the maintenance building, railway signal, equipment, minifigures, vegetation and irregular terrain all help create the atmosphere of a small, lived-in industrial railway facility.

With this project, I wanted to combine the two things I enjoy most about building with LEGO bricks: the visual impact of a display model and the pleasure of discovering how it works.

From a distance, it's a railway diorama. Look closer and you'll discover mechanisms, working doors, building techniques and hidden functions. And when the available space changes, it can change with it.

Compact when you need it. Linear when you want it.

A small railway world designed to be built, displayed, transformed and enjoyed.
