The sun blazed over the lonely Monkey Skull Island, surrounded on every side by the roaring sea. Palm trees and thick greenery covered parts of the island, while jagged rocks rose from the sand. Looming over it all was the infamous Monkey Skull Cave, its enormous skull-shaped entrance staring out across the shore like a silent guardian.

But the pirates of Monkey Skull Island weren't afraid of the cave.

They had made it their vault.

Deep inside its shadowy entrance, crates were stacked alongside the pirates' most valuable treasure. Gold, jewels, stolen riches, and mysterious cargo were hidden away within the cave, safely guarded from anyone foolish enough to try to steal from them.

Not all of the island's caves held treasure, though.

Hidden elsewhere was a smaller, darker cave with heavy iron bars covering its entrance. Behind them lay the skeleton of a long-dead prisoner, still locked inside the place where the pirates had left him.

No one knew exactly what he had done to earn such a terrible fate. Perhaps he had betrayed the crew, attempted to steal their treasure, or learned a secret he was never meant to discover.

Whatever the reason, he had never escaped.

Near the shore stood the broken remains of an old shipwreck. Once a proud vessel, it had been reduced to a battered hull and splintered timbers. The pirates, however, had found a new purpose for what remained. Parts of the wreck were now used as storage, packed with supplies and anything else the crew wanted to keep safe and dry.

Standing among the remains of the wreck was First Mate Flint, keeping watch beside the cannon. From there, he scanned the horizon for approaching ships. Should an unwanted sail appear in the distance, Flint was ready to send a cannonball flying before the intruders ever reached the island.

Elsewhere in the hideout, the pirates had built themselves a bar, a place where food was prepared, drinks were poured, and plans were made over generous helpings of rum. It was here that much of life on Monkey Skull Island unfolded, with pirates eating, drinking, laughing, boasting about their adventures, and undoubtedly arguing over who deserved the largest share of the treasure.

Against one of the walls was a weathered poster. There was no portrait or drawing upon it, only words:

WANTED: CAPTAIN JACK “CROW” RACKHAM
FOR PLUNDER, MUTINY, AND GENERAL MAYHEM

The poster was old and worn, but the name remained clear.

Somewhere among the nine pirates of Monkey Skull Island was the notorious Captain Jack “Crow” Rackham himself. Whether keeping his own wanted poster on the wall was arrogance, amusement, or simply a reminder of his reputation was anyone's guess.

The crew consisted of nine pirates in all, eight men and one woman, each with their own personality, secrets, and hunger for adventure. Whatever differences existed between them, Monkey Skull Island had become their home, their hideout, and the place where they guarded their stolen riches.

Behind the caves, monkeys scrambled through the trees, chattering loudly as they watched everything happening below. They had seen treasure carried into the vault, crates stacked inside Monkey Skull Cave, prisoners locked behind bars, and pirates celebrating at the bar.

If the monkeys knew all the secrets of Monkey Skull Island, they certainly weren't telling.

At the water's edge, a lone pirate struggled against the tide in a small rowboat, determined to bring the treasure safely ashore before the sea claimed it for itself.

Meanwhile, beneath the trees, Mike was considerably less concerned about pirate business.

He lay sprawled drunkenly across a sandy bank near the treasure, having clearly enjoyed far too much rum. Whether Mike had originally been ordered to guard the riches or had simply stumbled there after visiting the bar was difficult to tell.

For the moment, Monkey Skull Island belonged to the pirates.

But as the afternoon wore on, something changed.

The monkeys suddenly grew restless.

Their peaceful chattering became frantic as they scrambled higher into the trees. The wind swept through the broken timbers of the shipwreck, and the waves crashed harder against the shore.

Flint narrowed his eyes and stared out across the water.

The pirate in the rowboat stopped rowing.

At the bar, laughter began to fade.

Even Mike stirred beneath the trees.

Something was coming.

Perhaps the monkeys had spotted something the pirates could not yet see.

Perhaps another ship had finally discovered their secret island.

Or perhaps someone had come looking for the notorious Captain Jack “Crow” Rackham and the reward promised by that weathered wanted poster.

Whatever was approaching, it had chosen the wrong island if it expected an easy fight.

Because the nine pirates of Monkey Skull Island had treasure to protect...

and they weren't about to give it up without a battle.
