How are you supposed to know that there are b variant of some sets/items? I just
sold an 850353 (Darth Vader Key Chain) and the buyer complained that it was the
wrong item. I didn't understand what he was talking about until I realized
that there is actually a 850353b. How are you supposed to know? Searching for
850353 only gives you one result. So naturally when you add an item you look
at the number on physical item and search for it on bricklink and then add it.
In some cases it will be the wrong item. How are you supposed to know?

For that one the white tile would be a good hint if it’s present on the item
but not any images or vice versa, it usually would be found during the quality
inspection of the item during the listing process, as for other items, most of
them are connected with item relationships such as “same item with similar pattern”
or “similar parts with different molds” or such

But to answer more specifically, for items like lego, it’s always a good idea
to compare the item to the images as there are “countless” items with similar/same
numbers and similar items that have been produced over the years

This item is not connected as far as I can see. So how do other sellers do this?
Are you supposed to try to search for [itemname]b, [itemname]c and so on each
time you add something in case there are other versions?

Include a “*” at the end of numbers and it will search numbers that have a different
ending, (meaning if you search 3001* it will show 3001, 3001old, etc)

You can look at the picture and compare.
Yes of course but how do I know there is an 850353b when you only get 850353
when searching for the number?

Look at the picture, see it is different, so search for 850353* with the asterisk
to see if you have missed anything.
