Yes, sounds like you've been scammed. You never have to pay to verify your
BrickLink account.

Yes, contact your bank/PayPal/whoever you used to pay. You may also contact
the police.

When the message you receives says ...
CAUTION: This message originated from another BrickLink member and not a BrickLink
employee or administrator. Please avoid clicking on any links, sending funds,
or replying with any personal information.
this means it is not from bricklink but another user, no doubt a zero feedback
account. And when it says to avoid clicking on links and sending funds, it means
exactly that.
Did you enter bank or credit card details, or did you do a bank transfer?
It got me as the email came in a couple of mins after the email to register your
email.
Dang, they are pouncing on new users as soon as they register!
Maybe Bricklink should remove the new registered users list so that the scammers
don't have a means to find new users to scam.
💯 Exactly.
+1 it’s a little bad to have that especially as it’s a primary source for targets
and I struggle to think of any use case which outweighs it
IKR, it is a tempting target for scammers. March had more than 34,000 users register,
if just one tenth of 1% of those take the bait, that is 34 people scammed. $100
each and they are bringing in more than a lot of the stores on the site.

I’m in the wrong business.
*sigh* Why do I have a conscience?

We here, real sellers, neither don't - luckily!
Otherwise weighting the amount of stress and work, we'd do anything else
I guess.
Well, either the member has already been unregistred or there’s a typo somewhere.
It's been that way every time I've tried to report the user. I think
this is the fourth or fifth different name I've seen.

That has been the pattern. They seem to have automated the process so that it's
scraping the site in real time because just about everyone has reported the email
came almost immediately.

My daughter set her self up as a seller on etsy and was pounced on instantly
with similar 'you need to verify blah blah...' scam email.
Apparently it's rife on there.
Cleverly etsy place mails like this into a junk folder or something - on etsy
there's a specific folder for emails 'from etsy' themselves which
helps to reassure new users.

Well, there’s folders for PMs on BrickLink too, at least “Inbox” and “Outbox”
… but the problem is that all those messages also arrive via email, and then
BrickLink can’t do much than the caution text they already added.
Paid via credit card, trying to report it has been painful and not there yet.
That's good, report as a scam with no product received. Hopefully you'll
get it reversed. Always check the top of the email / message. If there is anything
after that claiming to be from bricklink, then it is a scam.
It’s been reported to the credit card. They haven’t been to helpful yet.
Really angry with myself. Having mental health issues at the moment and was hoping
lego would help be a break from it all.
I’d always thought of myself as someone who sees this and thinks I’m not that
stupid. I think it was getting the welcome email to verify the email and the
other email within a min or two that got me.

It really can help. Please try not give up on your Lego dream because of this.

Don't be too hard on yourself, you made a mistake, which is human. Learn
what you can from it.

Yes, like the saying goes: “Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame
on me.”
There are a lot of very nice people here, a few less so but forget about them.
Have a great time here buying/selling, I’ve found it a great experience.
