Anyone think of a legit reason I can have 5 Diagon alleys and 1 weights 1kg almost
exactly that the other 4?
ALL of them came from TLG, it was not a secondary market purchase.
No I do not want to open one and part it to find out lol.
You bought 5 of a set and one of them weighs 4 times as much as it should?
I would definitely open that one.
LMAO!, no I bought 5, 4 weight the same amount, 1 weighs 1kg more. They all came
MSIB directly from TLG maybe 18 months ago.
I put them all in exactly the same packing box, by size and weight. I like to
leave my bigger sets "pre packed" ready for shipping with box dimensions
and weights, so I literally get an order, throw a label on it and its out the
door within minutes.
It was 1 set of the 5 sets!
Yes if I had a set that weighed 4 times more than it should 1000% I would be
tearing it open and not even having this conversation hahahahaha
Well, the number is in the title, duh!
Seems we all need more waffles 🧇🧇🧇
And one is weighting 7.64 kg.
Well, that's not “4 times as much” but that's still 15% more. That seems
a lot.
I'd also note that the instructions weight 1.199 kg, in 4 booklets. Maybe
that one has 3 booklets in double?
My god strike me down and torture me for eternity for saying this. Sylvain has
offered me probable cause to open this mystery later today.
I should you tube this. Nope dont want the attention lol
What are the codes on these sets?
~Jen
Thanks Jen, I didn't think of that. Wouldn't be the first time different
manufacturing locations have put something weird in a box. Although that is generally
the components in a minifig and generally Mexico.

Mostly, I am curious if you just managed to get 4 EU sets and 1 NA. North America
sets weigh more due to higher quality paper and cardboard. Usually between 10-20%.

So the 75978 is one of those sets that does not have a batch lot number as you
see on others such as (412R5 & 724S0-taken from a Sonic playground and a fett
helmet)
It does have a "US & Canada" recycle declaration which would be consistent
with a mexico manufacturing. Also the Item number 6294190. I am confident all
are Nth American.
The weight of 3 of them matches Bricklinks data 6.64 kgs. 1 is 6.68 (4 grams
is likely a couple of extra bricks) and the one in question is 7.74kgs.
Assuming Bricklink catalogue people are right, and they always are as they are
meticulous and gifted people. Then the set is 1.10 kgs/1110gms overweight.

The weight for that set was submitted by a European seller, so it's going
to be the lower of the weights. The codes should be on the tape seals.

Sorry I misunderstood your question. I thought you were referring to box quality/box
identifying features as box weight varies between continents, which I agree with
you.

Well, I am fresh out of potentially helpful knowledge, so I guess it's a
wonderful/awful mystery then!
And, by the way, I wouldn't trust too much the weights etc on BrickLink because
they are only a single data point and, therefore, have a high potential to be
inaccurate.

Has he not weighed the other 4?
Yes, and that makes a total of 6 data points
Much more:
4.5 kg inventory weigth of parts & minifigures.
1.2 kg inventory weigth instructions.
That's 5.7 kg total + packaging (about 1 kg), that's about 6.7 kg.
The given 6.64 kg total is coherent.

3 perfectly matched Bricklinks data. 1 was a couple of grams over, which is consistent

Its a very valid & logical point you make.
The reason I didnt is because a shipper wants to know a total weight and dimensions
of the shipping box to impose its costs. But you like any other Seller knows
this.
The reason I don't need to theoretically is best all the packing materials
have exactly the same weight also. They were boxes that came from a flat pack
from the supplier in packs of 10 and assembled to pack the lego set into.
But for the sake of a few feet of tape. I will do exactly what you say and remove
them all and weigh them as "standalone sets". Because it makes perfect
sense to do that.
The outcome will/should still still be 1kg over weight. The end result will likely
end up in me opening the box. It not who I am, or want to be, as a Bricklink
store selling Used/Complete or New/Complete with the caveat "seals are broken".
As I don't do this for an income I have my very own special reasons for selling
lego.
I will do what you suggest, its sound logic in fault finding.
Yes if I had a set that weighed 4 times more than it should 1000% I would be
tearing it open and not even having this conversation hahahahaha
1 kg is a lot. I checked with an non-American to confirm that impression.
Seriously, I would suspect diamond smuggling. You should definitely see what
is in there. That set has a good part out value and diamonds are always welcome
at a jewelry shop.

LOL!!!!
My reluctance to part is because I believe it is one of those sets that has by
memory 15 or so really crappy minifigs which are unlikely to sell.
The parts to me are worth generally 35% of a part out value. Part out value compared
to set value are not close. I believe without checking its a proposition of 350$
v's 600$.
The set was in retail far too long to have any real "immediate" secondary
market value.
To me personally its a POS set. It does have a lot of value to a New Parts seller,
I am not that person and never will be. I couldn't think of anything worse
than having 20 Orders a day. I like getting my 1 or 2 Orders a day over various
platforms. I enjoy dealing with others and passing on things for them to sell
in there stores.
Would it be possible that you received some of them with plastic wrappings and
the others with paper wrappings inside ? I think paper is a bit heavier than
plastic. I don't know how many bags are in there.
One possibility...

According to the instructions, there's 20 bags.
Back-of-the-envelope (haha) calculation:
— 20 bags,
— all A4-sized at most,
— 40x A4 sheets = 2.5 m²
— if it were standard paper (80 g/m²), they would weight 200 g,
To weight 1 kg, the paper bags need to be at least 5 times as heavy as standard
paper.
And that's without counting the plastic they replace.

Seems too heavy for me.
It seems to me I am just going to have to suck it up and open it.

You could turn it into a forum contest ...
Niek.
You mean like everyone guess what the 1kg really is and then unbox it all (whilst
videoing it)?
I honestly don't have a clue what it could be, I like the double instruction
book theory.
What does the winner get? The opened Diagon Alley. Actually makes a lot of sense
and sounds like fun. But what happens is someone like Sylvain is right? The shipping
to France would have to be 120.00 its a big ass set!
15 or so really crappy minifigs which are unlikely to sell
What a positive outlook! Do you always look a gift horse in the mouth?
I am not a HP fan, what can I say. I have a few hundred HP minifigs sitting in
a tote not even listed, they annoy me. Not as much as "friends" sets.

Yes there should be 20 "plastic" bags with a couple of multiple numbers,
a 21 box which has a display plate and a couple of Harry and Hag figs box, instructions
and a bag un-numbered with larger plates.
This set was produced before the manufacturing change process to paper bags.
Sylvain makes sense, the instructions should weigh 1kg. No idea what the 21 box
weighs, but as an educated guess I would think around 300gms.

A plastic bags weighs around 0.2 grams and a paper one from the same size about
6 grams. That would not account for the difference in weight.
Actually, I think Scubasteve shouldn't be so mean and keep us in the dark.
Why all this speculation? He should just open the box and see what's inside

I'm also getting a little sick of all the posts by the same author that are
always followed by all kinds of pizza nonsense.
Could we please keep it businesslike? Not all of us share the same 'humor'

Martin,
I am not opening the box until I have considered all the variables. I sell new/sealed
sets, not parts, not used items.
I would literally be setting fire to 500 bucks.
To me it's not about speculation, it's about losing 500.00. It's
about me potentially and inadvertently disappointing a Buyer. In that disappointment
it becomes about me placing the Bricklink name and that of other Sellers into
disrepute.
Our collective reputations matter.
As for the comments about the "pizza comments". Lighten up big boy it's
all in jest and humour. That person you refer to in my multiple dealing with
him is honest, forthright, credible, informative and most of all a man of his
word. he may be a bit goofy but he is a good human and a good lego/bricklink
ambassador.

If everything goes well today it might come up to 2.75USD

disrepute.
It isn't selling for $500. Probably it will eventually.
It is selling for that much in our dollar, which should be enough to afford breakfast
and lunch if it sells
Unless you go to food basics where they sell food stuff really cheap

In Armstrong they don’t have food basics, but while I’m down south I can take
advantage of the one here
Anyone think of a legit reason I can have 5 Diagon alleys and 1 weights 1kg almost
exactly that the other 4?
ALL of them came from TLG, it was not a secondary market purchase.
No I do not want to open one and part it to find out lol.
You bought 5 of a set and one of them weighs 4 times as much as it should?
I would definitely open that one.
Would it be possible that you received some of them with plastic wrappings and
the others with paper wrappings inside ? I think paper is a bit heavier than
plastic. I don't know how many bags are in there.
One possibility...
Nicolas
A plastic bags weighs around 0.2 grams and a paper one from the same size about
6 grams. That would not account for the difference in weight.
Actually, I think Scubasteve shouldn't be so mean and keep us in the dark.
Why all this speculation? He should just open the box and see what's inside
and tell us.
I'm also getting a little sick of all the posts by the same author that are
always followed by all kinds of pizza nonsense.
Could we please keep it businesslike? Not all of us share the same 'humor'
of Scubasteve.
Thank you,
Martin
Martin,
I am not opening the box until I have considered all the variables. I sell new/sealed
sets, not parts, not used items.
I would literally be setting fire to 500 bucks.

An alternative could be selling it as “open box” for just a slight discount,
the shipping savings of not having to ship the extra kilo could make up for it
from a buyers perspective so long as all the bags are sealed, plus if it’s a
good error it may even be profitable (but still a gamble)
Our collective reputations matter.
As for the comments about the "pizza comments". Lighten up big boy it's
all in jest and humour. That person you refer to in my multiple dealing with
him is honest, forthright, credible, informative and most of all a man of his
word. he may be a bit goofy but he is a good human and a good lego/bricklink
ambassador.

I’m not sure what this sentence means, perhaps I need more pizza
ALL of them came from TLG, it was not a secondary market purchase.
No I do not want to open one and part it to find out lol.
It means I bought them all directly from Lego, not from a secondary person. So
in basic theory there should be no chance at all that the contents are a fraud
like some schmuck sticking an old pizza in a box etc.
Maybe I need pizza. Now I see why Axaday questioned it too. I just read what
you questioned and one could be allowed to assume I was having a stroke or English
was not my first language.
Not sure if this answers the question, but I have bought directly from Lego and
received different lot sets in the same order. For clarity - different packing
materials (cardboard vs plastic vs paper instruction bags, plastic vs paper part
bags) as well as different plastic types on the same parts in the different boxes.
Don't think that that would account for the difference, but it could contribute.
But....... I have (maybe 2 or 3 times in 2 years) received an entire extra bag.
So................
Yeah, I don't really know.

Yeah 1kg (and its exactly 1kg, not 957 gms or something).
It has never happened to me before. so like you its a rarity indeed.
To put it in perspective. I would on average over a 12 months period see 2400
lego sets above and beyond what I list in my store. I have a few retailers I
buy all there stocks which they tend to "liquidate" when we come near
retirement periods. For example right now I am seeing 400 sets a months. With
those I keep a select handful for my Bricklink store and the others get busted
open and onsold to Bricklink New/Parts guys. Who also frequent these community
threads.
So I could say I have had 10,000 sets go through my hands in 5 years. This is
the first time. It just sucks big time it falls into the plus "$500.00"
category.

I have purchased sets directly from LEGO and one time - one time only - I bought
a Star Wars set for my personal pleasure. When I put it together I found one
of the bags had half the parts wrong. Of course, I contacted LEGO and they sent
me a new bag with the correct parts. I always wondered though, had I sold that
set as SEALED and the buyer complained about one bag being wrong, I would have
thought the buyer was trying to scam me. I never would have thought that someone
at LEGO would make a mistake like that. So it does happen that mistakes are
made. Weigh the sets and open the one that doesn't match.

Exactly Pam. I value my reputation as you do yours. I don't ever want to
sell something "New/sealed" to a buyer only for them to be disappointed
and me ignorant.
500 bucks is a lot of money for some people.
Nice to hear of another Seller that is mindful of a Buyers desires and expectations.

Yes the box was a 1 kg over. I rang my lego manager and we met this morning to
cut her open. But they didn't have an exchange so I had to settle for another
Rivendell in lieu. Which is a better set in my opinion and clearly financially
in my favour.
The unboxing raised plenty of questions and Sylvain was partially correct. There
were 2 lots of instructions and stickers.
What was missing was Qty 4 - 16 x 32 baseplates.
We believe somewhere during packing an error occurred and people realized baseplate's
were missing from a minimal number of sets. They went to fix it and whoever fixed
the issue manually put in a second set of instructions.
"Apparently" this has been found in a few sets in Nth America, and is
isolated in Nth America.
"A Few" literally means the abnormality of this can be counted on your
fingers and toes.
Yes I did by the defective set back also.
That is a first for me in thousands of transactions.

I was just poking fun
Wrongly using gendered/human pronouns for objects is a frequent error of French
speakers.
Also, I’m quite sensitive to bad or confusing usage of pronouns, like using
a pronoun without a referent, or using the same pronoun for different referents
in the same sentence. My mother do that all the time, you need to stop her to
ask who did what to whom.
But it’s interesting it’s common in Aussie slang.
We may have the same default: a French comedian remarked in one of his skits
that when something is “serious”, it’s masculine, and feminine is for small or
frivolous things… or for trouble!
Of course, that’s just cherry-picking and macho bad faith

Yes now I own a New/Incomplete 75798 -Opened, no baseplates.
I bought it back at full price but got 1/2 back in VIP Points. I know a parts
guy in Ontario, I might send it to him so he can part it out to his heathens.
No Minifigs, No baseplates, No box, No instructions, with sticker sheets. Sounds
like a parts guy recipee to me.
A lot of parts, I think he would require a an extra large pizza.

5,500 parts in 1,000 lots, yes, an extra large pizza for the Nubs, and lots of
small containers to sort them all

I just checked it and it’s over 2150!!
What’s happening?!
For starters, you’re viewing the page and therefore participating in increasing
the number of views
Otherwise, well, I guess the reason why there’s so many view is still there,
mostly because the message didn’t change.
If it had been indexed with a high value in some search engine for some search
terms, people (or bots) will continue to be led to it when they use these terms.
IOW, it’s famous now. Whatever the reason it became famous won’t change that.
That’s the same for most famous people out there. Grab your 15 min and milk
them.
Anyone think of a legit reason I can have 5 Diagon alleys and 1 weights 1kg almost
exactly that the other 4?
ALL of them came from TLG, it was not a secondary market purchase.
No I do not want to open one and part it to find out lol.
Fate and fortune is an interesting thing.
Good to know what happened! Thanks for sharing!
😭😭😭😭😭😭😁😭😅😂😁😭😅😂😁😭
Didn't have time to read the whole story - OP explained that the extra kilogram
was an Ontarian Pizza in the box??? Oh but that corresponds! Life's weird.

Thanks for the drama and suspense! Now I don't need to watch any TV tonight.

Good thing you didn’t sell it, there may have been a very upset customer
