Hello Bricklink experts! I have a customer who ordered two Dark Red
Hinge Brick 1 x 4 Swivel Base to replace two broken pieces from Set 8088 SW ARC-170
Starfighter. My two pieces for sell are the older, more cherry colored, dark
red. I want this customer to get what they need so does this set use the more
cherry dark red color or the more modern brick colored dark red? Thanks so much!
I know I can count on you guys to steer us right!

They should be the modern version.

It's actually a very interesting question and made me physically look at
a new/sealed 8088 I have down stairs.

8088 according to Bricklink records the set came out in 2010. Its first release
was December 2009. But obviously TLG works a few months behind that to create,
package, distribute and ultimately have the 8088 in stock on shelves for sale.

That means sets were produced/manufactured in 2009. TLG went from BASF pre coloured
ABS manufacturing pellets in 2010 to inhouse pigmentations during 2010. Hence
the 2010 coloured change

So there was a 6 month production run under BASF/ABS and a 22 month production
run under Inhouse pigmentation (red variants)

So I compared the actual bricks. They are different. It is hard to notice. But
it would be highly noticeable in a build introducing a different variant.

I would be inclined to replace all the 50 or so bricks to be certain.

Also in saying that, the others in this thread whom I refer to as the "parts
guys" are way smarter than me.

I'm not sure about the date for the in-house molding, but that's not
the main factor in the change for Dark Red in specific. The color was reformulated
and renamed internally ("Dark Red" to "New Dark Red", under the
same ID) at one point. The switch over in element IDs (PCCs) occurs in 2008.

the main factor in the change for Dark Red in specific. The color was reformulated
and renamed internally ("Dark Red" to "New Dark Red", under the

My long term understanding is a PCC is not an element iD if you are describing
the "chemical components of a brick". A PCC is element id if you are
describing a "part and/or colour of an individual brick.

The question was in regards to the "change in colour" not the "change
in name of the colour". The change in colour occurred through a different
manufacturing process. That occured during pre and delivery production. That
was my point only in the instance of 8088.

If my memory serves me correctly it was late 2006 to mid 2007 TLG commenced using
PCC ( I think logically PCC also means Part/Colour/Code.....I'm not sure
but it sounds logical to me) for a brick type and a color type of that brick.
Bricklink may or may not have adopted the same, I don't know. It was also
at this time the types of seals used were modified and also change in other geographical
locations.

I was not a member of Bricklink in 2007, actually I have only recently started
to used Bricklink in the last several months. I don't and never have purported
to understand PCC's. I was known in lego communities long before 2007. Even
in 2007 my personal sealed collection was in the hundreds of sets. I actually
donated a few dozen sets to TLG's library. I say donated, but they paid me
in lego. I didn't actually give anything away.

Actually I have won the dumb question award about individual parts with some
members of the community every week, for at least the last 6 months.

The chemical composition of a brick changed after 2007 and then the influx of
brittle Brown, Red and Green bricks broke easily. Chemicals elements continued
to be changed, that was 2009-2010 and carried on for a few more years.

The PCC is not relevant to the chemical composition of a brick in that context.

I am quite certain that specific buyer could get all those red bricks replaced
free of charge from TLG
