I've never seen Mr. Gold in person, nor is it likely that I ever will, I
only have this hat. I've seen a couple of videos comparing the original with
a fake, my hat has chrome on the inside, I'm just not sure about the shade.
Would be really nice if someone who has the original was able to confirm (or
deny) what I have is genuine

Almost certainly fake. There have been 1000s of copies sold on ebay and other
sites, I imagine this is a hat that has fallen off one of them.

Well, that's a bummer. I know the chances were rather slim, but the fakeness
isn't immediately obvious like with some other pieces, so it was better to
ask, even if I knew I wouldn't like the answer . Nonetheless, I'm gonna
keep it, possibly the only fake piece I'll allow in my Lego room.

Does it have any numbers on the inside?

Honestly it looks to me like it could be a legit Lego part that was subsequently
chromed.

I don't know anything about Mr. Gold but I don't think Lego typically
uses dark-colored parts for chroming.

That would be Milky White, or “not coloured” ABS

Ah this one. I call it "natural plastic".
I've a few test bricks in this (absence of) color.

Most definitely. I later found cane and hilt, those are genuine pieces, it's
just really hard to tell whether the chrome application is Lego's or third
party.

You can see the base colour for torso, legs, cane and hilt is pearl gold. Hat
is most likely black, head unknown.
