If Lego owns Bricklink, why can’t they upload set inventories for new sets when
they are released, instead of having it be necessary for a member to go through
the arduous process of manually adding the new set inventory?

LEGO think in terms of productions, molds.
They include extra parts which may vary.

BrickLink think in terms of shape and color of parts, whatever the production
year/factory are - and apart very different variants like 3794 and 15573.

BrickLink inventory of a set is based on parts necessary to build what's
in the Instructions.

See definitions in Help.

It seems there's some communication between both, I don't know up to
which level - but still inventories and catalog aren't the same concepts
for both. In short, AFAIK, and until now of course.
