It has several things going for it that makes it harder to source:
- It's been in a dozen sets at best.
- It hasn't been in a set for seven years.
- Most of the sets it appeared in were from the brittle era
I'm needing one that won't snap on me if you have any from those late
2000s SW sets to sell me. I would it rather look as new as possible, but if it
has some wear, that would be alright.

A couple of months ago I was going through some years-old orders that I had in
a spare room that I had never sorted. I had a bag of 40 of that exact part.
I did a simple stress test on the plates to see if they would break under normal
conditions. I connected them with only a 2 stud overlap, and then tried to separate
them. One would break every time. Out of the 40 I had, there were zero
survivors.

Yikes. Good luck with that. When LEGO switched to New Dark Red, they gave the
brittle parts their own numbers despite the color still being Dark Red. The tile
you’re looking for is part number 4526907, which doesn’t appear to have been
in production for very long. Your best bet is to ask sellers for a translucent/lighter
Dark Red 6180 from those 2008 Star Wars sets.

I wasn't aware that Dark Red changed. I would have thought that they would
have changed around 2004 with the grays.

Many colors changed when Lego went from colored pellets to clear pellets with
dye for the colors. You can see this easily when held up to a light.

I think it was, though it was only created in 2001, but it was also changed in
2010, and it was brittle until 2018 or so (= LEGO changed the formula without
the intention of changing the colour in 2018).

The brittle Dark Red was introduced in 2008 alongside the bad Reddish Brown.
I don’t think I’ve had a single Old Dark Red part break on me. A fix in 2018
sounds right, however.

Some of these 2007/2008 sets included a mix of both Old and New Dark Red. My
later copy of 7665 includes a combination of both. They’re pretty easy to tell
apart, but may not look too good together in the same build.
If you’re looking for a 6180 in the modern Dark Red, you’re only going to find
brittle parts.

Just a possible thought, probably a stupid thought but here goes anyway, while
I was looking to see if we had any in dark red I noticed that magenta was actually
not toooo far off in color, could that possibly work for your project (no laughing
in digression)?

Jim
There is nothing stupid about offering someone an educated opinion/option in
a bleak situation......Just saying, Good for you Jim!
