I don't see the logic why

Part No: 33909 Name: Tile, Modified 2 x 2 with Studs on Edge
*
33909 Tile, Modified 2 x 2 with Studs on Edge
Parts: Tile, Modified {Tan}
is considered a "Tile, Modified"
and

Part No: 41740 Name: Plate, Modified 1 x 4 with 2 Studs with Groove
*
41740 Plate, Modified 1 x 4 with 2 Studs with Groove
Parts: Plate, Modified {Tan}
is considered to be a "Plate, Modified".

To be able to up my sorting speed, I like to understand the logic. Who knows
the reasoning?
(Or maybe there is no logic, and it's rather a situation of who was doing
the classification decisions at a moment in time.)

Fixing this is in catalog project hell. It could be done, but there is a lot
else to do.

If I were in charge, I would go with:

Studs are the definitional difference between plates and tiles, so a stud would
make it a plate.

Studs are the definitional difference between plates and tiles, so a stud would
make it a plate.

Thank you for the reply.

The "having a stud makes it a plate" seems indeed like a very simple,
straightforward and logic rule.

Exactly, once a "tile" has a stud, it becomes a plate, not a modified
tile

They should 100% be "plate, modified" - trying to find these parts on
Bricklink & Studio is extremely annoying due to there being an inconsistent categorization
for many, many parts

Another recent example I've come across is this:

Part No: 32828 Name: Bar 1L with 1 x 1 Round Plate with Hollow Stud
*
32828 Bar 1L with 1 x 1 Round Plate with Hollow Stud
Parts: Bar

Considered a "bar"

While

Part No: 3661 Name: Plate, Round 1 x 1 Open Stud with Bar Arm Down
*
3661 Plate, Round 1 x 1 Open Stud with Bar Arm Down
Parts: Plate, Round
is a plate, round

same with

Part No: 26047 Name: Plate, Round 1 x 1 with Bar Handle
*
26047 Plate, Round 1 x 1 with Bar Handle
Parts: Plate, Round

Instead of merging part variants, how about we get the catalog straightened out
first so everyone has solid guidelines on part categorization

I didn't even think about that. That must be super annoying.

New rules are needed for Tile and Plate Modified before they can fix it.
Perhaps something like this:

Tile, Modified: 50% or less studs or attachment that is not in normal stud position.

Plate, Modified: Missing one or more studs but the remaining studs are
in normal plate position.

This is just a fast ides that probably need more words.

It should be in "normal stud position" not plate position.

For the most part a "modified" has something added to the regular configuration.
I can see the argument going either way. Create a new category (and word) called
plile.

If adding studs to a tile makes it a "tile, modified" we don't even
need the plate category.

HA! I guess. Someone linked some other threads in my thread too I think. I
was genuinely asking because I'm trying to fully understand the nomenclature
and how things are classified for when I start inventorying sets and run across
something new.
