In the past, buyers haven’t marked the orders as completed, I sent them reminders
but they still never did it.
What am I supposed to do when this happens? How long am I supposed to wait until
I mark their order as completed?

As a buyer i would suggest if there is a tracking number you provided with the
order, i would enter that and see if it was delivered and if it was then mark
it completed. i mean us buyers check that tracking to see when it's going
to be delivered and such, just use it like we do see if it was delivered,

Completed - Package received, contents verified, the order is completed.
Seller can't do this.
The link indicates "Seller sets this status" and also "Buyer sets
this status." Why does the seller even have the option to set this status
if it's something they can't do? BL should maybe remove that option...
I wrongly had assumed that the "Complete" status was not visible to the
other party (buyer or seller) since we both had the option to set the status.
I thought it was just for our individual record-keeping.

True, that should be clearly stated and developped accordingly, but you know,
little stones, big rocks... Maybe it's not very important as of right now?

I've asked this many times in the forum when this subject comes up. Lots
of guesses but never a definitive answer.
the same reason that if you submit a catalogue change request for an item, then
try to submit a change for another item, but that second item already has a change
request pending, that it then overrides your initial request info . in short
its just bricklink being bricklink. based on the TOS is 100% clear a seller should
not be changing order statuses to complete but it likely won't be changed
any time soon as with most things

Your first remainder - first annoying message buyer received. You didn't
mean it but that's how it is. They paid and received the order otherwise
they would have reached you. Why would they need to do extra work? Is marking
order complete an essential purpose of life?
DO NOT change the order status yourself, DO NOT ask buyers to change the status!
and why on Earth would you even worry about that? How does the status of orders
gonna serve you?
This is totally optionnal and you can't do it for them.
Simply file the order on your side so you don't see it.
Follow 1001bricks' advice to the letter and you will soon sell 1001 bricks
to your buyers.
They'll get around to it at some point, but if they don't it's not
going to affect anything.
I vaguely recall a post from about two years ago where a buyer was mad that the
store marked the order as completed and I think this somehow limits the buyers
ability to file an NSS (?). I honestly can't remember the specifics of that
thread but it was enough to make me just file orders without any status change.
I'm sure one of the experts can correct me or add more info.
Here's some orders from May. 16 people marked their orders as Complete,
14 have not.

+1 every week (or several weeks) I have buyers mark orders from many months ago
as complete (sometimes just a few days shy of the 6-month purge) so they have
a reason for doing that. Plus as was mentioned. The seller cannot possibly “verify”
the order is complete after it arrives so there is no valid reason a seller should
be changing the order status

Never. You should never mark orders as complete as the seller. Buyer will when
they are ready and if they never do then it isn’t an issue. You should also not
be messaging them (which will be annoying at least some of them) to mark it as
complete. Once you mark an order as shipped the only thing you have to worry
about is leaving feedback (if you havnt at that point)

Just file the order so you don't see it, don't worry about sending a
reminder or marking it complete, there's no valid reason for the seller ever
to do this.
If a customer has not verified after a month their loss but I have pictures of
all parts shipped in case they do. No store (such as Amazon)would let you complain
after 30 days that part of an order is missing neither should Bricklink.
But once an order is marked completed a Seller can not request a refund of Bricklink
fees.

Actually Amazon allows complaints for missing packages for 90 days. But things
would be weird around here if we used Amazon's standards for customer service.
I have had no problems in 20 years with Amazon's customer service.

One can open a PayPal Claim or Visa charge back up to after 6 months.
And I don't know any Country that defines "30 days" as "a maximum
delay to complain".
Much more, and that's the main argument: completed means the buyer decides
it's completed - see Help.
Sellers with an OCD - File your order and don't watch its status.
Much more, playing with a status nobody asked you to, you also risk the Negative
So you also show up at the buyers house after their order arrives and open and
verify the package for them? That’s the only option if you’re complying with
bricklink rules. So many magicians on bricklink! (Must cost a lot on gas! )

I just dont worry about it. Makes it easier on both ends.
