most sets still have physical instructions but a few (such as the Mario) are
all digital. I have mixed feelings on it. on 1 hand as i part out lots of sets
i end up throwing away (probably) thousands of pounds of instruction manuals
so its a massive waste on the other hand if i buy a set to build i want the physical
instruction manual so if i have an internet outage or something i can still build
the set.
1 potential solution could be that be default sets dont include instruction manuals
for those who dont want them but then if you did want it you could place the
order directly from lego for the set which would then have a checkbox to include
it and then that way you could still get one tho this would likely not happen

I haven't built from the printed instructions since... well, since I built
a set without digital instructions. I hate using the books. I always have a tablet
handy.

it can be fun with digital indeed! sometimes even preferable but what if your
internet provider (cough cough rogers) loves random internet outages?

I download the pdf as soon as I get the set. Then, I never look back!

Our provider **uh hmm** BELL, sends us bad routers that don't work then we
have to talk with customer sevice which takes forever, to get a new one which
also gives out in the next 4 weeks.
I do not mind them as it allows you to rotate and zoom to see the fit better
than a standard book. That said, my wife, 5 year old daughter, and I still use
the books for most of them.
So far Mario is the only theme that I have come across without printed instructions.
I think this is more because it is supposed to be an interactive set requiring
the app so they went mostly paperless.

The Bricklink Designer Program doesn't either.
And a lot of the little parts are thrown in the big bag without a little bag
too. It really feels like corner cutting.

And Dimensions.
I wonder if Super Mario and Dimensions got around licensing issues by getting
the game license instead of the toy license and whether that restricts them.
It could be that if the toy had instructions, it would be a toy that came with
a game and they'd need the toy license and a lot of the things they were
doing other companies already had the toy license. If you have to play the game
for the toy to work, maybe the toy is game accessory.

I hate it. I wonder how much money is saves them.
Completely wild guess, TLG actually bids out the instruction print jobs. That
allows them to accept bids where-ever they have a final assembly facility. Putting
together 5k or 10k of a small run set, then asking for print bids, might actually
cost considerable more than a 50k-100k-500k run for a SW set.

if you strictly compare inflation - piece count lego sets are very similar in

Very true but we lost the instructions
only on some but the vast majority of sets still have them. on that note if
you ever need a couple thousand pounds of duplicate instructions delivered yearly
and are willing to pay shipping i may have some

Not a fan. At all.
I personally collect older sets, so I haven't personally had an issue, but
occasionally I build a set to sell that I don't have a book for, and using
the computer is just a miserable experience.
I wish they just had them listed separately for sale rather than not at all

As someone buying a set to build, I love using the printed instructions but when
I buy sets to part out, even though I always put them in the recycle bin, it
is still a shame throwing out a large stack of perfectly good instructions even
if they are recycled - it is still a shame.

Wanna know something weird? I just finished rewatching "Good Will Hunting"
Seriously. Though that might've been a planted, subconscious selection. Only
works on the weak-minded

Yep, same with physical media (dvds cds etc). I don't live in a very rural
area, BUT bad weather knocks out power sometimes, and its nice to have something
to do that doesn't require the internet/streaming.
I read a reddit post once where a guy in Mississippi was the king of his neighborhood
during a two week internet outage because he had a library of dvds for bored
kids to watch

The internet could go at any time so I've got 6 seasons of Daniel Boone,
4 seasons of Andy Griffith and one season of The Lone Ranger as back up
