“Just” good math.
Border detection and “smart” selection (magic wand selector) have been there
for decades.
Doing it pixel by pixel, well it’s like that joke:
The woodman’s wife is back from town with a chainsaw.
Her husband asks her: “What’s that?”
Wife: “It’s a ‘chainsaw.’ It’s a tool to cut down trees. The seller told me
you could easily cut 10 trees or more a day with that. With winter coming and
you getting older, that’ll be better than your old axe!”
Woodman: “Uh?”
So, the next day, he goes in the woods with his new chainsaw. He comes back
at the end of the day and his wife eagerly asks: “So, how many trees did you
cut?”
Woodman: “Pah! Only 2. And that was hard work. I would have done 4 with my
axe.”
Wife: “Oh, but what happened? The seller–”
Woodman: “Yeah, well, you got had is what happened! I’m going to town tomorrow!”
So the woodman goes to town with his chainsaw and enters the store.
The seller sees him: “Hello my good man, what can I do for you?”
Woodman: “Well, you sold that ‘chainsaw’ to me wife t’other day and it don’t
work!”
Seller: “Oh, but that’s a good tool. Never had a problem before. Very reliable
brand. Let me see.”
And he takes the chainsaw from the woodman, moves away a bit and pulls the cord…
