Hi
I'm planning to move to Spain from Canada in the next few years. And I'm
looking for information on how to run my store from Spain. What is the revenue
amount for which I would be in the obligation to register my store with authorities
? How would it work to register my store as a company ? How does it work with
VAT ?

Thanks in advance for all the information you could give me.

I'm actually French and feel like coming back to Europe. I chose Spain
for the number of days of sun and for the health system (among a lot of other
things).

We have Quebec

"I say something we agree on!" Most Canadian singers stink.
The only Canadian artist I listen to is R.R. Slugger

LOL I love France, don't get me wrong, I spent the first 20 years of my life
in France. But I think I'll definitely prefer my retirement in Spain

Yeah health system is one of the best in the world. After being hospitalized
here twice between last December and February, I've made my decision that
Quebec health system is not going to take care of me when I get old. Better safe
than sorry

Lucky you, for me it's a 3 hour drive to the nearest hospital

1 hour and 20 mins, by helocopter.

Ouch too far to go to hospital if you are sick enough to require a hospital.
What a mess ! I'm sorry for you.

Let's just say the community feeling of a small town (and not being bugged
every min by some crook) makes up for that. (We do have a clinic(I think))

Even in the big town (Brampton) it still feels like a small town and we’ve never
had crooks tho I did know a guy who had a brother who’s friends were supposedly
robbed of their phones when walking in an underpass at like 2 in the morning
but that was like 10+ years ago

Lucky you, for me it's a 3 hour drive to the nearest hospital

1 hour and 20 mins, by helocopter.

Ouch too far to go to hospital if you are sick enough to require a hospital.
What a mess ! I'm sorry for you.

Let's just say the community feeling of a small town (and not being bugged
every min by some crook) makes up for that. (We do have a clinic(I think))

Even in the big town (Brampton) it still feels like a small town and we’ve never
had crooks

In my town nobody "steals" they just "borrow"... until some one
notices the thing is missing

Thanks in advance for all the information you could give me.

Is it really that bad over in Quebec?

I'm actually French and feel like coming back to Europe. I chose Spain
for the number of days of sun and for the health system (among a lot of other

Cool, health care's that good eh?

I thought you where moving because of the no gwp policy over there

Yeah health system is one of the best in the world. After being hospitalized
here twice between last December and February, I've made my decision that
Quebec health system is not going to take care of me when I get old. Better safe

Unless you’ve a batmobile, a helicopter should be more than twice as fast as
a car, so I get you mean it’s 40min for the helicopter to reach you and 40min
more to get you to the hospital?

Isn’t there a doctor in the helo?

Or is it the “find a wounded, transport a severe case, register a death at the
hospital” method?

That's about it.
The drive is over 250km.

Isn’t there a doctor in the helo?

Nope too expensive.

Or is it the “find a wounded, transport a severe case, register a death at the
hospital” method?

Basically, yes.
Just Dec. 21 some one I know died on the helo.

When moving to a different country be aware that you'll need to keep everything
you bring into the new country for at least a year otherwise you'll have
to pay a bunch of extra taxes & fees.

Other than that you will have to register for VAT if you think you will earn
more than 10.000 Euro (not 100% sure on the number) in 12 consecutive months.

Great, thanks for the info ! By the time I move, get a place to live, get my
stuff from Canada (by boat of course so it will take months), it will take at
least a year or two before I will be able to reopen my store.

Thanks for the info about the threshold amount as well. I'll try looking
on Internet to confirm it but so far I haven't found anything.

That threshold is for intra-EU sales excluding domestic.  So all of EU but Spain.

Otherwise, each EU country has its own thresholds and procedures and statuses.

The domestic VAT threshold can go from €0 to €90,800.  AFAICT, Spain’s threshold
is €0.  So every professional should get a VAT number in Spain.

Searching “EU VAT thresholds” leads to that page: https://www.vatcalc.com/eu/2023-eu-vat-registration-intrastat-thresholds/

Searching “VAT registration Spain” leads to that page: https://administracion.gob.es/pag_Home/en/Tu-espacio-europeo/derechos-obligaciones/empresas/impuestos/IVA/registro-pago.html

(Note that many EU countries have governmental pages in multiple languages… except
France 🤷‍♂️)

But as you’ll have been in Spain for many months before opening, you’ll have
time to ask a real local expert

Wow amazing!! Thanks a lot. It will be a good start for me. Getting an accountant
is also a very good idea. That’s probably what i will do. I’m so unfamiliar
with all this since i didn’t need to register here in Quebec as i didn’t reach
the threshold.

I’m really looking forward to moving. I spent 15 years in Quebec. It was great
but now it’s time for something else! I want to get back to my roots, probably
spend a bit of time in France while looking for a place to live in Spain. It’sa
good thing i still have my French passport. It will make things easier!

A few years ago the threshold to register was if you surpassed the annual minimum
salary amount, nowadays its 15.876€

Good luck on the move, see you under the same sun!

Thanks ! I'm so looking forward to moving to Spain. It will most probably
be on La Costa Blanca either Alicante or Valencia. Let me know if you know the
area. We could chat via email.

I'm in the process of listing everything that must be done first. So many
things to think about it's almost overwhelming ! The administrative part
will be the most tricky (transferring Canadian and Quebec pension to Spain while
closing everything here and finding a place to live in Spain, etc.).

A few years ago the threshold to register was if you surpassed the annual minimum

Good luck on the move, see you under the same sun!

Sounds as if you've embraced "carpe diem" Not many of us do...

Not Spanish, but have lived and worked (operated) abroad for many years of my
life. My advise is to learn Spanish (Castilian) well, make the effort. Having
command of the native language is fundamental in opening prospects in your new
cultural home.

Thanks for the advice. I actually took Spanish classes in high school when I
was in France and in University as well. So I'm still pretty good at reading
it. But I lost the "talk" so I'll definitely get some classes for
that.

Good idea.

First place I landed abroad, I was required to take a submersive language/culture
course, 5 days a week/8 hours a day. Felt like brainwashing, in that I literally
could not stop processing (turn off) the language or absorption of my surroundings
vis-à-vis advertising, etc. that I was surrounded by on the subway home or elsewhere
on the town. Crazy stuff... But it did definitely paid off for me, being immersed
so completely into the culture so quickly.

Shouldn't make fun of birdbrain individuals, even if it's "underwater
basket weaving" the fowl finds pride in

Great, thanks for the info ! By the time I move, get a place to live, get my

Thanks for the info about the threshold amount as well. I'll try looking

That threshold is for intra-EU sales excluding domestic.  So all of EU but Spain.

The domestic VAT threshold can go from €0 to €90,800.  AFAICT, Spain’s threshold

Indeed best places to go! Send me a message via Bricklink and we can chat from
there on.

I'm in the process of listing everything that must be done first. So many
things to think about it's almost overwhelming ! The administrative part
will be the most tricky (transferring Canadian and Quebec pension to Spain while
closing everything here and finding a place to live in Spain, etc.).

Yeah I moved from Ireland to Canada last year and I still haven't reopened
my store either.

I highly recommend to get a moving company that does international moves, they'll
handle everything, there is a lot of paperwork involved. I think the container
took about six weeks to arrive if I remember correctly (Moved from Ireland to
Canada Last year)

When you have settled and ready to reopen your store I would suggest to find
an accountant that can help you set everything up tax wise.

Oh yeah we love it here . Its so easy to see wildlife everywhere, lots of national
parks that are easy accessible. Also I'm earning more than I did in Belgium
and have to pay less taxes here

There are some downsides though, you need a car to do basically anything, almost
all stores/ restaurants are chains and groceries are pretty expensive.

There are a few things we didn't expect:
- The amount of wildfires that happen
- the size of the country (My home country Belgium literally fits between Edmonton
& Calgary)
- Seeing a Tornado in Alberta

Great to hear!

There are some downsides though, you need a car to do basically anything,

interesting! I've heard in Europe things are generally closer so that would
make sense

almost all stores/ restaurants are chains and groceries are pretty expensive.

Yeah it can get quite expensive if you shop at metro, loblaws, etc but even so
I still find my local freshco, food basics, no frills, etc to be decently aforadbale.
i can get 4 pounds of ground chicken for $10 (its normal price not a sale price)
(which for those curious is about 7.37 USD)

There are a few things we didn't expect:

yah! its quite surprising just how common they are. when i was younger I always
thought they were a rare news worthy thing but then realized that they are quite
normal and common
https://www.fireweatheravalanche.org/fire/

   - the size of the country (My home country Belgium literally fits between Edmonton
& Calgary)

its pretty big!

   - Seeing a Tornado in Alberta

Yeah I moved from Ireland to Canada last year

How has the first year been?

Its been great so far, met a bunch of new people, saw a bunch of animals that
I only saw in a zoo before (and some that I've never seen in real life before)
and its so easy to go to a national park and leave the city behind for a few
hours.

I take it you like nature
I think where I live we have to much of it!
E.g. Bears breaking into peoples houses. A few years ago one ripped the door
off our shed!
