It would be very helpful to allow members to subscribe to threads and topics.
Particularly for threads if they have participated in the thread.

With all the catalog merges going on, it's unreasonable to expect BL members
to have to monitor hundreds of unrelated posts to know when significant changes
occur. I understand why BL wouldn't want to push notifications to every member
for these changes but allowing us to opt in to discussions that matter to us
would provide an significant and immediate benefit to everyone.

Even being aware of the merges and seeing the list from the first big batch,
I was caught up in a lot of frustration from unexpected consequences and subsequent
merges that didn't receive the same level of attention.

I'm assuming the suggestion to bookmark means bookmark it in the browser.
That doesn't do anything to let me know when the topic or thread has been
updated. I still have to periodically check the bookmark to see if there are
updates. That solution doesn't scale well nor is it proactive.

How do you do that?

Do you really want to receive notifications every time a message is posted in
a specific topic? You will be getting multiple notifications a day. Better to
bookmark and check daily / weekly or whenever.

Not by topic, by thread.

The terminology is different (and not consistent) between forums.  Sometimes,
“topic” means ‘sub-forum’ (like here), sometimes it means “thread” (like on the
Studio forum).

Other forums allow to subscribe to a thread, or if there’s an answer to a particular
post (when someone used the ‘reply’ button of that post) or if you’re quoted.

Also, they mark posts as (un)read and allow to jump in a thread to the first
unread post.  (Better than relying on the change of colour of the links by your
browser.)

The Studio forum always had problems with notifications because e-mails don’t
work there.  But you can easily see when you’re quoted now (in the banner, no
need to look at all the new posts).  And you could always see if there were new
posts in a sub-forum or topic.

That could be nice here too.  But then, the BL forum works more like a newsgroup
/ mailing list than like a forum.  And it has particularities that would be difficult
to port to other engines.

On it's face, an excellent and hard to argue against idea. How would/should
it be implemented is where its met resistance when brought up here in the
past.

You've got my up-vote, nonetheless.
