Hello everyone,

I've recently started adding inventory to my shop, thought Id start small
and went with the brick's category. All my brick's are used. Very soon
I realized that I cant correctly identify all the color's.

I've taken a photo of the 27 different color block's that I have, and
tried to use https://www.bricklink.com/catalogColors.asp as a guide. The photo
doesn't seem to catch the true color of the brick, I've made my guess,
but some I still find very confusing. What makes it more difficult is that some
of the brick's I have 1 - 3 pc's at the moment, so I cant really compare
if they're faded somehow, although they're in good condition.

Anyways here's the photo, after doing this, I do realize it's impossible
for someone to accurately tell me what color brick I have, but I guess I'm
not the first one with this problem, so any suggestion's and overall help
are appreciated.

P.S left side is no flash, right side with flash.

In my opinion, here are two options:

1. Buy a very new set with a lot of different colors so you can see for yourself
by referring to that set's inventory. Examples include sets 11035 and 11036
shown below. It's definitely some money up front but at least you will have
a known comparison for most of the colors.

2. If you have more special pieces (not just 2 x 4 bricks), you can find the
part in the catalog, then see what colors officially came in sets by reviewing
the "known colors" in the price guide. Sometimes a part only came in
a couple easily identifiable colors: for example only in dark orange and tan
but not any other color, so you know you have a dark orange brick.

Best of luck, - Chris

Agree, build a colour chart of known colours.

Although instead of a set, buy a single part in each colour from a (good) BL
seller, making sure that no two pieces are the same part number. You can then
easily match the part IDs to the colours you bought.

Thank you for the reply

That certainly is an option, Id have to buy new, just to be sure that there is
no discoloration.

What piece would you recommend doing that in, I mean what single piece is good
for comparing, comes in a large variety of color's and is accessible, meaning
there are few or no rare color's of that part ?

If you are unsure of colours, I'd go the opposite and buy different parts
in different colours. That way, there is no ambiguity in which colour each part
is.

All the same part looks nicer as a chart, but getting it correct at the start
is more important than looking nice.

For my own colour chart, I tend to use 1x2 bricks, 1x2 plates, and 1x2 tiles.
I find they give a good selection of surface types without taking up too much
room.

I also recommend tiles (decorated) for modern colors.

Thank You for the reply.

After posting I've came up with the idea which is basically what you said
in option 2.
I do have lots of different kind's of piece's that I could use to compare,
only problem there is that because I am fairly inexperienced, I don't know
what piece's came in say mostly 2 - 5 color's, and which came out more
or less evenly in 20+ color's. For example I have a bag of 30136 Brick, Modified
1 x 2 with Log Profile. I see that there are far fewer color's in there,
and comparing to BL I'm fairly sure that the one piece that stands out is
probably
a dark orange brick, the one with the lighter color, which I have a few is probably
medium nougat.

But the other color's I don't really know how to search for a piece that
was made in lets say maersk blue, but not in many other blue color's.

Anyway, this still help's, have 5 pieces of 4216 Brick, Modified 1 x 2 with
Channel, three of them are clearly light bluish gray, but the other two, I wasn't
sure before, but now I know that they are in sand blue, because there just aren't
any other gray/blue options from the known colors tab.

Photos aren't good enough for color identification. Direct comparison is
the way to go. Find a decorated part that only comes in your color to use for
comparison.

For example:

Part No: 59349pb334 Name: Panel 1 x 6 x 5 with Brick Archway, Dark Blue and Dark Bluish Gray Frame and Lattice Screen, White Roses, Leaves, and Thorns Pattern
*
59349pb334 Panel 1 x 6 x 5 with Brick Archway, Dark Blue and Dark Bluish Gray Frame and Lattice Screen, White Roses, Leaves, and Thorns Pattern
Parts: Panel, Decorated
only comes in Medium Nougat.

Printed minifig legs are great for this!

Part No: 970c07pb12 Name: Hips and Blue Legs with Magenta Boots, Silver Bubbles Pattern
*

Parts: Minifigure, Legs, Decorated

I saw that once I was done, realizing it was basically pointless near the end,
and decided to leave it in, there are actually a few place's that I've
had to stretch some frame's to cover up my mistakes
