At this time they thought what you'd also thought.

LEGO has had clear rules from the start, so there is no excuse.

I don't think they marketed them to kids. I doubt they were sold. They
are most likely Business to Business gifts.

Hopefully they learned how to not loose customers by following short sighted
and toxic mass trends that are now currently hell bent on ruining our society.

???
How is that relevant to the topic??

+1 some of the figures are pretty cool (and it the main reason lines like the
new dungeons and dragons cmf are interesting since even if I've never played
it before I'm sure the parts are going to be pretty cool)

The figs where kinda cool, I just feel the time, and money was wasted, when it
could have be directed elsewhere.

Loved the 4, 5 and 6.
Some others also, some very very much less.

Just like Game of Thrones, first season, incredible.
And the Walking Dead, beginning was good!
The rest...

Couple of Harry Potter were genious.
I slept while watching the last ones.

While this, American Gods and The Man in the High Castle on Amazon Prime are
good from start to end

Totally IMHO here.

Well, the fact that The LEGO Group is the largest toy maker on the planet is
enough, in my opinion, to justify them taking chances on new ideas even if they
don't pan out in the long run. After all, businesses don't have success
after success after success without some failures thrown into the mix.

In short, if you learn valuable lessons from a failure, then it is not time or
money wasted.

I'm guessing you're a bit younger than I am, for someone of my generation
not to have seen Star Wars is incredibly rare. For that matter I'm not bothered
by Lego smoking supplies either since almost adult in my family smoked while
I was growing up.

Agreed - Who cares about Star Wars anyway?

A lot of people care about Star Wars.

The only Star Wars movie I've seen is The Force Awakens, but I thought
it was pretty good.

But, then again, I am a chicken.

What was LEGO thinking when they branded this??

These were likely employee gifts or branded giveaways to vendors or business
partners. Back when these were produced a third to half of the adult population
smoked.

In circa 1980, global smoking rate among men was 41 per cent.

I still smoke, sorry - but separate office from the shop, don't worry.

And drink wine (but cool). I'm French, what can you do?

On the other side... no sugar, fast food, living in a village countryside, car
uses LPG, fewest pollution we can apart electric which is too expensive.

Ah and all home/office's automated Home Assistant/Lovelace on a Khadas VIMS1,
everything's controlled, lights turn/off auto everywhere etc, minimal expenses,
and heavy loads at the best power rates (ex: night).

In short, I guess everyone's doing his best at his time? Including LEGO?
I wish that'd be true, I hope anyway.

Dihydrogen monoxide kills around 236,000 people a year. It's one of the deadliest
and most powerful elements on the planet. But you are around it every day.
Like alcohol its only dangerous if you don't respect it.

You've personally seen the someone dispose of an electric vehicle before?

But, in all seriousness, there was a recent discussion in the forum about recycling.

It turns out much of the plastic we recycle here in America is simply sent to
China and other less economically developed nations, where it simply sits in
landfills or is burned: https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1445621

So, they send us their garbage, and we send it right back!

But one thing that Americans are good at recycling is cars. We love our vehicles,
and we like to keep them around even after they stop working. I know some people
who enjoy fixing old cars in their spare time.

Of course, the more complicated the vehicle, the more difficult it is to do your
own maintenance, but that's what licensed mechanics are for.

So, it depends on your perspective. Yes, the process of manufacturing electric
vehicles (particularly the batteries) is expensive and environmentally destructive,
but the vehicles themselves generally last longer and don't create as much
pollution while being driven, possibly being cleaner in the long term.

Electric vehicles still consume energy, but that energy can come from many different
sources—natural gas, uranium, guy turning a hand crank—not just oil.

Electric vehicles also work well in big cities, since braking can be used to
recharge the battery and you don't have to worry about the health hazard
of breathing exhaust.

But if you live in the country where the air is clean, there's little traffic,
fuel is cheap, and you've not much money, there's little reason to buy
an electric vehicle.

Some batteries also have a hard time holding a charge when they get cold, so
if you live in a cold climate, that's another reason to keep burning gasoline.

But the technology is constantly evolving, so it may not be long before someone
invents a battery that works in cold weather.

In short, there's pros and cons to both.

true, but the battery’s can’t just be scraped, they are full of toxic metals.

Of course, the more complicated the vehicle, the more difficult it is to do your
own maintenance, but that's what licensed mechanics are for.

Hmm, licensed mechanics are best know for lying, scamming, and ripping you off.
We need to be able to fix our own vehicles, otherwise when the mechanic tells
you your car is toast you won’t know otherwise, and as a result you may have
to get a new car!

The batteries in ev under good conditions are known to last for only 7 10
years. I’m currently driving a 2008 odyssey with over 400,000 km!
The good thing though is that when being driven the only pollution being made
is larger amounts of rubber coming off the wheels from the weight than a normal
vehicle.

true.

That’s the problem, the government doesn’t like people being spread out or being
able to drive far. People are harder to micromanage that way.

+1

Also we got to warm the earth up enough so we can be warm too

But the technology is constantly evolving, so it may not be long before someone
invents a battery that works in cold weather.
I hope so

Only 710 years!?

In all seriousness, just replace the battery. There's no need to replace
the entire vehicle just because the battery doesn't work.

For example, I have a 2017 MacBook Pro. There was an issue with the battery,
so I paid $200 to have it replaced instead of thousands for a new one.

Of course, $200 could also buy you a decent Windows laptop or Android tablet.

But you do have a point, batteries are toxic. For example, I used to have

I forgot to take the batteries out; when I opened the battery compartment years
later, it was full of greenish blue corrosion.

Fortunately, it is easy to fix by ordering a new

But what do you do with the old one? Just throw it away?

I know some Batteries are worth good money at scrap yards but at least here in
Canada for the rest you put them in a bag on top of your compost container and
a couple times a year they collect them and recycle them

Well, the problem is not so much the batteries as it is the corrosion. These
were just standard AA alkaline batteries, but with all that corrosion in the
battery compartment the device became dysfunctional.

Anyway, I forgot about the whole mess and ended up donating all my old sets to
someone, so hopefully they were able to fix it.

Do some research, it’s fascinating what lies the government is trying to push

Citation needed. I did some very quick research and it turns out EVs makes less

That is while they are on the road and full functional but what do you do with
the worn out battery, that is filled with toxins. Also to make the battery’s
there are thousands of gallons of waste water that is filled with toxic metals
from the refining of the metal.

What was LEGO thinking when they branded this??

Keep in mind that the LEGO Group was founded in the 1930s. Smoking was very common
back then and the adverse health effects of long-term smoking were not as well-known
as they are today.

In fact, the Nazis tried to stop people from smoking, at least in Germany (maybe
Denmark, too), but they failed.

It wasn't until more recently that people began to realize the true cost
of smoking, and quit. But many people still do.

Furthermore, these products were probably targeted toward adults rather than
young children.

But I wonder the same thing about Star Wars, for example. Sure, I understand
that the LEGO Group won't produce modern military sets because they don't
believe in violence.

But Star Wars is okay? Sure, it's fictional, but how many people will ever
see real combat?

But I guess the fact that it's more fictional (in space, etc.) makes it more
acceptable in the eyes of the LEGO Group than Russia vs. Ukraine, for example.

Though, the nature of the toy being customizable, many people use it to build
war dioramas. So, it's a bit of a moot point.

On a related note, someone in the Studio Gallery made a working cigarette dispenser:

There's plenty of weird stuff in the BrickLink catalog.

But, being dolls, they were marketed and sold dressed, not naked like they are
in the catalog.

When these were made, they would have been as common as a branded coffee cup
is today.

It's weird looking back on the 60's when my doll house furniture came
with ashtrays and cigarette lighters attached. Mom bought us bubblegum cigars
and candy cigarettes.
