I propose an analogy between LEGO parts and Stamps - where there is basically
the same 2 different needs, approaches and goals.

On one side Collectors, Historians POV

We've to carefully differentiate those:
Type I: without shading on the first circle to the left from number 1 (NBN).
Type II: shading on the first circle to the left from number 1 (ABN and CBN).
Type III: retouching: darker engraving in upper corners (ABN).

Price: up to huge.
Availability: complicated, up to impossible.
In forum: present and shouting
Number: hundreds to thousands?

On the other side, every day Buyers, Builders, Creators POV

Price: 68 cents.
Availability: quasi infinite.
In forum: zero
Number: tens of millions (with half a million already on BrickLink, and
millions on PAB)?

BrickLink will of course choose to support the vast majority of buyers.
Just like USPS is selling base stamps for every day usage.
Because it's what the vast majority needs.

BUT BrickLink will ALSO keep on providing it's finest Catalog on Earth to
those who need details of the History of the Brand.

Please Collectors, Historians, rebuilders of Sets from the past - consider the
whole market. And you'll still have the Catalog we all love and use.
So what?

I really and sincerely hope that helps?

paid for.

I do too, I didn’t order the more expensive variant just cus. I order because
I want that specific part.

And somehow the obvious solution is to smash them all together so that buyers
who care must look through thousands or at least hundreds of listings trying
to find the note "Older variant"

The chair with sprue really blows me away, it's such an obvious easy to see
vintage part that would look out of place in this set (and many others):

Set No: 6391 Name: Cargo Center
*
6391-1 (Inv) Cargo Center
530 Parts, 5 Minifigures, 1984
Sets: Town: Classic Town: Cargo

After the merge you are slihtly more likely to get what you paid for (if you
place an order, of course), as there will be fewer variants incorrectly listed.

USPS doesn't sell the George Washington 10 cents stamp from 1960 does it?
(not sure if it exists, but will you get my point!). At least our national Postal
service sells only NEW stamps.

So the analogy is a false one IMO, as Bricklink (TLG) does sell 1960 bricks and
not only new ones.

Check stampword dot com for instance on stamps, or dive into the AFOS (Adult
Fans Of Stamps) community and you will seek geeks that look for different teethings
on the same stamp.
Same goes here, so if it would be true analogy, follow the catalogue like AFOS
and leave the variants as is. Even if there a just 100 AFOLS who are keen on
this, leave it. Do not have it changed because 'it's easier'.

Effort brings skills. Put some effort in getting around, understanding the catalogue
and ask questions. Members help members.

BrickLink could support _all_ buyers if the situation was handled correctly,
and that means coding the site for _all_ buyers and not just a different subset
of buyers. The current solution is not the correct approach. BrickLink knows
it, but for whatever reason are unwilling to take the time and resources to solve
the issue for good. Unfortunately, they would rather just make a different subset
of users upset.
