I’ve been a member here since the earliest days, according to user number I understand
that I’m one of the first two thousand members of this site. In the time between
when I originally joined and now we’ve seen many great improvements, so much
so the site is barely recognizable anymore. However the entire time there has
been one core guiding principle: BL provides users with a way to buy the parts
they need.

With this merge that will be eliminated. I won’t be able to easily identify I
need a 9 ratchet dual hinge piece or an axle hole variant of a 2x2 modified bricks
with hinge in my want list for a set I’m trying to put together based on communication
shared by the admins. This is a clear move backwards in friendliness and functionality.

I can’t recall a loss of functionality like this in my time at BL. Sure there
have been some things that have been eliminated but none of them would prevent
putting a set together or identifying a needed piece.

I understand these changes may make life easier for sellers but it’s important
to also make life livable for buyers too. Surely there is some other solution
that can be found to this problem, because it’s clear that this wide ranging
merge that includes merging pieces with differential functionality within the
system is not the right answer.

Nicely put into words, but I am afraid it's useless.
The BIG thread on this topic has a massive list of arguments NOT to go forth
with it. But the 'life will be better and who cares' prevails... the
change WILL be made and I feel deeply sorry for all that feel alike.

can't we all just calm down on this & focus on the real issue of listing
every single part by year manufactured .... that way everyone can be 100 they
are getting the correct part for the set that was produce the year the set came
out.

anything else is uncivilized.

someone please start identifying all parts this way.

Why would you need a 9 vs 7 tooth hinge? They both have the same range of angles.

we need more variants really, like other platforms do! but any discussion is
useless, they already decided it in 2023 without asking.

They don't have to ask. It is their website, not mine, not yours, not ours.
They own it, lock, stock and both smoking barrels. How many other websites listen
to their users as Bricklink does? They do listen a lot, but in the end, they
can make unilateral decisions regardless of your or anyone else's opinions
or desires. In life you either evolve and adapt or you go extinct. If you choose
to go elsewhere because of this then I wish you luck, if not you will learn to
adapt to the new normal. That goes for everyone. I think quite a few of the
older sellers will continue to keep variants separate and sell them correctly,
others won't care, right now I guarantee there are plenty who don't care
and it won't affect them at all.
This is being done to streamline the listing and buying process for the vast
majority of the people who use this site. You don't hear them because they
aren't in the forums, they just want to buy and/or sell, they aren't
interested in anything else.

I wish I could remember the user who I used to talk to here who would get upset
because Daniel wasn't interested in listing the older non-brick items in
the catalog. This is not a Lego history site; it is a marketplace.

As a collector of part variations, I think that most (but not all) of the variants
that are now being merged are not more significant than variants that are currently
not separated in the catalog (such as CA/ABS, different IP protection marks,
hollow pins, split tubes and several more)

Sorry man but bricklink is a catalog first and market place second. That's
why the catalog is as detailed as it is.

It's the exact opposite in fact; but of course, you can see it as you wish.

Causality, correlation?

You are incorrect. BrickLink was created as a marketplace first and foremost.
The reason that it attained such a detailed catalog beyond that is due to the
fact that the marketplace was very successful and fans wanted to help make it
better.

I don't like the change - it will make things more difficult for me both
as a sellwr and a buyer. I personally don't care what BL was meant to be
- for me it's both.

But who could have made such a decision 😡 Another super genius from Lego who
had nothing left to do! This is the worst that we can imagine in terms of decision
and it is certainly not the AFOL community that would have validated this.
Lego wanted to buy Bricklink and they are now doing everything to destroy this
platform. There's no better way to open a competing site. This is truly enormous
stupidity!!!

That kind of remarks always makes me think about “the boys on the board” from
Airplane 2 the Sequel (sorry, couldn’t find a pic).
