I was parting out legos I got from a bricklink seller and I noticed a different
sheen on one of the plates. Looking closer at the back I see a part number and
a lego copyright but they're both awkwardly large. Not the tight imprinted
letters I'm used to. Seeing that one prompted me to start looking at others
and I'm seeing patterns I don't recognize. I'm not sure if these
are just older manufactured legos with less precise printing patterns or if they're
quite good counterfeits. I've attached some photos of the parts alongside
others which I'm a lot more confident are real. Let me know what you think!

Here are the things that jumped out at me in each:

orange 2x8 plate: different sheen on surface, hard to read oversized copyright
on bottom. part number exists but its spread out, in a larger print and in a
different location.

green 2x3 plate: top looks fine, bottom doesn't contain a part number or
a lego copyright but does include a number 2 printed in one of the stud indentations.

black plate 2x2 corner: no lego print on bottom, part number large, one of the
studs on the bottom used for grabbing has a different edge style (flat vs sharp)

blue 1x4 plate: no lego copyright or part number. a number 2 printed inside one
of the backs of the studs.

They’re legitimate. They all predate 2003.

Those are all legitimate parts. I just don't get the hyper paranoia buyers
have nowadays about counterfeit parts. The forum is replete with posts about
parts that people think might be fake because they don't match 100% with
the parts they have from the past few years. As time goes on LEGO makes new
molds and makes tiny changes on most iterations of parts. I suppose the Chinese
clones are to blame. Sigh...

Dear god I agree.

I go through hundreds of lbs a year and the only counterfeits that are even remotely
convincing are usually marvel figs once in a while. No one is bothering to copy
plates and other regular parts.

Some of us older fans have seen all the iterations, in real time, so I do get
that perhaps I can see and spot things newer hobbyists can't. That said I
agree its a way too common concern.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I was unable to find any online resources
to help me identify the historical mold patterns. If someone here on the forum
has the knowledge and pieces, it would make a very compelling blog post. It would
likely go a long way to reduce the commonality of the concerns.

Just wait until variants get merged! 🙄

Hopefully there won't be too much of an issue if photos are used to show
all the variants. There are already quite a few parts catalogued where there
are multiple variants shown in pictures and mentioned in the notes. For example
if the merge for the 7 and 9 teeth goes ahead (a proposal I don't think is
too bad), then it should be noted the part could have 7 or 9 teeth but produce
the same angles hopefully along with close up photos of both variants.
