How in hades does this happen? What's more, none of the other pieces in
the set appear this damaged or have matching marks where they would have caused
the gouge. There are two of these in the same set (1x12) which is funny because
I believe one of my Hogwarts sets was missing 1-2 of these in the rafters
above the dining hall.

Looks like you have to contact LEGO Customer Service for replacements for parts
that were damaged either during manufacturing or during transit.

They should take one look at photos like these and will probably ask you to send
the defective parts back, along with the tracking numbers on the packaging itself.

Some of these large pieces like bricks and plates I got them that way in sealed
sets, usually even a minor bending in the box for whatever reason stressed the
parts.
