| My powered up system is giving me problems.
1. there seems to be only the fastest speed available.
2. there is only power when I keep the button on the remote pressed down.
Is there anyone with answers?

Are you using the app or the remote?

The remote. Does that make a difference?

Yes, it does. With the app you can program the remote to do what you want.
Powered Up is fun for kids to play with but frustrating for adults to learn how
to use, even if you have experience with traditional programming languages.
I suppose it might not be so bad if you played with robotics kits when you were
younger, but personally I find coding easier than drag-and-drop programming.
The hardware is simpler, though. You don't need a separate infrared receiver
anymore; the hub serves as both a power source and a bluetooth receiver.
And unlike infrared waves, radio waves can travel through solid objects, so you
can build around the hub and it still works.

Can it be done without the app? We don't have a smartphone. That's why
we bought the remote.

Do you have a tablet? Any bluetooth-enabled device with the app should work.
Of course, you can always use just the remote, but then you're limited to
just the basic functions described above: full power when the button on the remote
is pressed, and no power when it is not. In order to perform more complex functions,
you need the app and the programming capabilities that it provides. Sadly, as
far as I am aware, there is simply no way around it.
This is part of the reason why I don't collect LEGO Powered Up: I can't
guarantee that the software will continue to work decades from now.

I know exactly what you are talking about.
I own the same remote and train(I don’t have a phone ether) and I have experienced
the same problem.
It seems to appear randomly, and if it happens I just turn the train off and
let the remote turn itself off. Then it will be fine.
If that doesn’t work try turning the remote off first.

Disregard everything I previously wrote in this thread. I just tried using the
remote and it seems to be working fine. I had the same problem you were having
when I first tried to use the remote, but it seems to be working now. You don't
need the app or a smartphone, after all.

How did you get it to work?

I just turned it on and it worked.
I guess the classic advice "Have you tried turning it off and then on again?"
is relevant here. Otherwise, see if you can get a hold of a smartphone or tablet.
