| Why aren't we allowed to use descriptions such as "like new" on used
items? I've been wondering about this rule for quite a while and it doesn't
make sense to me. I understand why we can't describe used items as new but
"like new" does not mean the same thing as new. "Like new" means
almost to me.
It is my suggestion that we do away with the rule that descriptions such as "like
new" are not allowed.

| No.
I propose instead: Newsed.
Problem solved, don't thank me.

But why not... Uswd? I guess that wouldn't work too well.

I prefer too describe such parts as pwnd, it's just about as clear
as newsed, uswd, and like new.
Terms like als nieuw and zo goed als nieuw are also acceptable.

If I understand correctly, the reason that BrickLink doesn't allow sellers
to use the term "like new" to describe used items is because it's
too subjective and in the past sellers would abuse and overuse the term by applying
it to any and all used items in their store in an effort to deceive buyers into
thinking that they were getting something better than they really were.
Personally, I see no reason why the term should not be allowed when one can simply
choose not to order from sellers that try to deceive their buyers, but of course
some buyers are more susceptible to this type of deception than others.

Especially buyers who don’t (yet) understand that on BL, items have a New/Used
condition with real rules and differences in treatment (PG…).

Even experienced buyers sometime make mistakes. I design MOCs in Studio/LDD,
generate a Wanted List and use algorithms to buy the parts. I generally prefer
to build with new parts, but I remember one time I forgot to specify the condition
in my Wanted List and ended up with mixed new and used parts. Of course, I didn't
read the description or comments either, so marking them as used but writing
"like new" wouldn't have made a difference.

I agree with this suggestion. Thought from the onset that the reasoning behind
the decision taken to disallow the terminology, flawed.
That said, I also understand the admin's motivation in the decision. Though
on balance, not a good move, imho.
Vote: yes

I'd rather see a sub-condition of used parts that are damaged or flawed.
Maybe call it "used-poor". That way I can filter out damaged stuff with
auto select. And also people who are looking for cheap damaged parts can search
for those specifically.
Then you can list your "like new" parts in the regular "used"
category

I like that idea! After listing a part as "used", the seller could be
required to check boxes listing all the flaws that apply, and then the description
could optionally be used to add more details. So for example, the seller could
check all the boxes that apply from a list like this:
-Faint scratch marks
-Heavy scratch marks
-Slightly damaged print
-Heavily damaged print
-Cracks
-Yellowing / discoloration
-Dirty
-Broken
-Mint
And the "mint" box could only be checked if no flaws were indicated.

"Like New" is an incorrect descriptor for a used part. "New"
in Bricklink does not describe the surface condition of a part, it describes
the usage history. That means that to say that a used part is "like new"
is saying that it is not "like used" which would make no sense, and potentially
confuse buyers who may take it to mean that although the item has been listed
as used, it is actually new, or has the same usage history as a new part.

By default, used items that are "like new" shouldn't have a description
at all.
The only time you should be putting descriptors on used listings is if there
is something additional flawed about them.

As a buyer, I never know if the reason why used items have no description is
because they have no flaws or just because the seller didn't bother writing
a description. I find items that have a description like "excellent condition"
a lot more reassuring than items that have no description at all, because at
least now I know that the seller did check the condition.
