| Hi all,
I’m shipping from UK to US and the buyer wants me to ship to a reshipper. I’ve
verified his bricklink address as the reshipping company but I don’t really understand
why he’d wouldn’t want it shipped to his home address. For context this is for
a Star Wars SDCC exclusive so it’s fairly valuable and I don’t want to get scammed.
Anyone with similar experience?

Hi,
Is the reshipping company in a Sales tax-free state or a state without “facilitator/marketplace”
law? (They often are.)
(List here: https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=2503 )
In that case, that could be tax evasion.

That is about $1050 USD. Sales taxes are in general between 8 to 10% depending
on the states. That is about $100.
You SHOULD ship with signature as per PayPal's terms (check for yourself)
otherwise the buyer can file a claim and get a full refund.
It is also possible that the package will be charged Duties (different than sales
tax) when it reaches to the US' customs. If the buyer do not pay duties,
they won't deliver the package and then, you need to pay return shipping
to the courier to get the package back to the UK. I am not sure if all couriers
accept an online payment for duties. I know UPS does accept it. But if you ship
with Royal mail, then maybe the duties are charged via a paper attached on the
package and then, only the person who can pick up the package (the personnel
of the forwarding company) can pay the duties.
I don't know the threshold for duties in the US and I don't have enough
information since I live in Canada. I know it exists since once I ordered a high-value
order to US and my buyer had to pay duties on top of sales taxes.
I am ok to ship to forwarding companies when the value of order is not too high
(at least less than $800 so a signature is not required) otherwise I don't
accept it.
I personally think you should cancel the order.
Note: if the buyer pays you directly via PayPal, and asks you to ship to the
address on PayPal (i.e. his home address), that is also tax evasion because the
sales tax are not added to the invoice on bricklink and they are not collected
(only possible via PayPal onsite payment)

Thanks for the advice,
He says he would try to complete the purchase via paypal onsite but he did previously
ask me if accpeted wire transfer which I refused. I've also warned him that
I'll only ship to his bricklink address at this point but he has yet to reply
(time difference in his replies to me suggest he is west coast US). I'm on
the fenc right now but yeah I think withthe high value it might be best to cancel.

Personally, I allow my international buyers to pay via transferwise.com and I
even give them even 3.9% discount if the pay via transferwise.com because there
won't be 3.9% PayPal fees. (only for orders that do not include Sales Tax
or VAT because bricklink collect these fees via PayPal Onsite)
I give them my bank account and they pay via transferwise.com
I receive them money and that's it!
Benefits:
- I don't need to ship with signature.
- I already receive the money. So if the buyer messes up and doesn't pay
custom fees, don't collect the parcel,... I am not at risk.
so basically, the buyer has to trust me and once I receive the amount, he can
no longer get a refund via transferwise.com in anyway. I just make sure I ship
with insurance and I don't mess up the address,...
I am not sure who wire transfer works and how the fees are handled and I am not
sure why you don't accept it but I think there won't be any risk for
you.
PayPal is risky because buyer can submit a 'false' claim and get a whole
refund. This does not exist on transferwise.com

|
Oregon is one of 4 or 5 US states with no sales tax (that would have to be collected
by BL). Is the buyer going to make payment via PayPal or Stripe (and via an onsite
method) ?
Shipping inbound (via Oregon) could be an attempt to dodge the sales tax of their
local US state, but that's only a guess on my part. Sales taxes vary from
state to state, with a few up around 10-11%.

Hi Nita,
Thanks for the info, buyer stated he wants to do paypal onsite and I did remind
him Stripe is an option onsite as well. He did previously ask for a wire transfer
which I refused and made me sus on what he was up to. Not sure how this all impacts
me though?
Thanks

Another point is that as a Seller you're absolutely not protected by PayPal
or Stripe if you ship to another address than the one on those platforms.
As it's also may be seen as tax evasion, I wouldn't.

It's equally likely that they aren't in the US at all. Several chinese
buyers will ship to the US and then when sufficient packages are received, they
are shipped in bulk to China

Hi, yep the buyer has just confirmed to me he is in the Philippines and he say
it’s much easier to use a reshipper due to pacakages being stuck in limbo at
Philippines customs. My only concern at this point is if there is damage/loss
whilst the package is at the reshipper or during final transit to his home address
then I’m still liable for it.

You are not liable in that cases and if he pays via transferwise.com or wire
transfer, then he cannot file a claim and get a refund so he cannot make you
liable in those cases.
Of course, you should pack well and securely and make sure you give the best
service.

| I’ve sent and had orders sent to a shipping forwarding company on many occasions
(including high $ items at about the same price point as the item being discussed)
without issue. The buyer may live in a country that you don’t ship to/have bad
experience with certain shipping companies and wants to use the shipping forwarding
one as he’s comfortable with it and not necessarily that they are an American

I am trying to understand how using a re-shipper in Oregon would cause a package
to have fewer custom’s problems in the Philippines ? Duty schedules are typically
established by the country where the package is being received at. Sometimes,
the receiving country will give preferential treatment to packages shipping from
a few sending countries.
If you shipped the package directly to the Philippines, it would be your responsibility
correctly fill out the customs form. You are responsible for filling out a custom’s
form for a package going to USA, but I have no idea what the reshipper is going
to put on the customs form from USA to the Phillipines. Does anyone know who
is responsible for that form. Or do they take the word of the person paying for
the service about these details ?
In many cases, these reshippers are handling outbound packages in bulk, sending
all bound for a given country in air freight container, then breaking it down
on the other end and injecting it into the local countries delivery services
there.
Your responsibility is (generally) to ship to the address as provided by the
payment service. The BL address is not the address that will protect you from
a chargeback, it is the address from the payment service. If the customer uses
PayPal, make sure the payment details says ELIGIBLE.

It’s not so much avoiding or reducing customs charges but as he explained to
me normal post gets stuck in customs for prolonged amounts of time, sometimes
months at an end. Apparently reshipping speeds up this process since they have
‘priority’. He also claims it’s very common practice in south-east Asia. I’m
asking my friend there to see if that’s true or not. No issues about customs
and import charges, I’ve made that clear to him that he is liable to pay those
on arrival and he’s accepted that. It’s also part of my T&Cs anyways.
Thanks for the advice on the address

While there are many legitimate reasons for using these types of services, I
do not recommend going through with this transaction.
You are not a high volume seller who has extensive experience with overseas transactions
and probably don't want to handle the emotional swing of having such a large
order go poorly.
Keep in mind, the risks of damage or theft when shipping a high value set overseas
are elevated. Also, the value of the set can lead to all sorts of tie-ups in
customs (there can be corruption in customs departments to shake down more money).
And Paypal protection isn't worth much, especially if they go through a credit
card.

order go poorly.
Keep in mind, the risks of damage or theft when shipping a high value set overseas
are elevated. Also, the value of the set can lead to all sorts of tie-ups in
customs (there can be corruption in customs departments to shake down more money).
And Paypal protection isn't worth much, especially if they go through a credit
card.

Hi
Thanks for the advice. Yeah I mean there’s still a lot of questions over this.
I keep flip flopping every 5mins over this but I guess it’s better safe than
