| This is a post for anyone who wants some easy catalog credits. I am not terribly
interested in said credits.
1. Standardize Face Mark
The site uses Scuff Marks, Scar, and Crosshatch (and who knows what else) to
refer to the same pattern, making it quite difficult to locate similar items.
The site does not, of course, make use of the glossary and this has resulted
in repeated problems of a similar nature.

2. Standardize Diving Suit
Problem is similar to the one mentioned above. Here we have Scuba Suit, Scuba
Gear, Scuba Diver, Scuba, Diver, Diving Gear, Diving Suit, and who knows what
else. But wait, tags will fix everything!
By the way, I believe the acronym Scuba should be SCUBA. Sort of like it's
USA, not Usa.
3. Fix Leaf
A single leaf is not a leave.

4. Fix Foot Descriptions
These are really all over the place in a bad way. We have Shoe Tips, Boot Tips,
Toes, and who knows what else roaming around in the titles.
5. Add Relationship Matches
This part needs a relationship match added, although there are likely many more.
6. Correct Misspellings
Should be "Handheld" and "Video Game."

Should be "Video Game."
[P=3069bpb0672]
Should be "Raccoon."

7. Standardize Stomach
There are 111 "Stomach" items in the catalog:
There are 38 "Belly" (a slang term for stomach) items in the catalog:
8. Add Pattern
These items are missing the word "Pattern." For the dragon head, every
other animal body part includes the word "Pattern" except this one.

10. This Chick is Wrong
This is not a Friends item and that part should be removed. This is, however,
an air animal and not a land animal. These birds can definitely fly. Also,
all those commas right at the beginning of the title are somewhat off-putting
and unnecessary.

11. This Ain't Anything Like a Dog
Seriously, I have seen a dog and they don't look much like pigs. The same
Friends issue in the title. The same problem with commas.

12. Trenchcoat vs. Trench Coat
Eight of one and 21 of the other. Should instead be 29 of the same terminology.
13. Let's Capitalize Lloyd's Name Correctly
14. Tyrannosaurus rex
Marek made time to correct these catalog-wide some years ago, but the wheel is
rolling back down the hill now.
The correct capitalization (rex is never capitalized) as included in most catalog
entries:
The incorrect capitalization that began occurring after Marek:
And a variant:
* | | 2523pb01 Minifigure, Headgear Head Cover, Costume Tyrannosaurus rex / Dragon with Black Eyes, Reddish Brown Stripes, and White Teeth Pattern Parts: Minifigure, Headgear |
15. What is a Closed Smile?
"Mouth" is a search term used in the catalog.
Then someone started using "Closed Mouth"
Then someone started using "Closed Mouth Smile."
All good so far, but then someone decided to omit a critical search term: the
"Mouth" portion.
The number of "Closed Smile" and "Open Smile" search terms is
increasing and this is a problem. The word "Mouth" should always be
included in a description of what a mouth is doing.
And my mouth is saying goodbye until next time.

A stomach is an organ, so none of them are correct. Any other term like "abdomen",

with "stomach" to keep things simple.

I did not research this topic prior to posting. But I see that Wikipedia says
the correct term is abdomen. I have no preference at all, so long as the same
body part is referred to using the same terminology
The abdomen (colloquially called the belly, tummy, midriff,
tucky or stomach) is the part of the body between the thorax
(chest) and pelvis . . .
Some administrators had a fondness for discovering the correct names for things,
which is why we can find somewhat uncommon words like filigree, tulle, epaulettes,
finial, paled, cantilever, mortarboard, campaign, toque, auricles, keffiyeh,
mandibles, and pantograph. At other times slang or lower-class words infiltrated
the catalog (such as potty, spiky, splotch, lolly, poop, and belly).
In the absence of any guidance from Help pages on the level of language one should
expect from the catalog, the best that can be hoped for is that at least the
search terms will be consistent for similar items.

Sure, we'll spend all that extra time we have for administering the catalog
developing a documented lexicon that all current and future administrators will
need to memorize and recall verbatim when asked.
Or we can just try and keep up with the massive workload we already have. Since
we are on pace this year to reach record numbers of catalog items added and inventories
added with just four admins, I'd say we are doing pretty damn good, thank
you very much.
But you know what really helps us out? Passive-aggressive forum posts that list
all of our mistakes.

Randy, the purpose of my post was to share contribution opportunities with others.
No reasonable person should have assumed I was attacking the catalog administrators
in that post unless their reaction was driven by emotion.
Every catalog administrator already has a memorized lexicon of search
terms used in the catalog. The problem isn't the lexicon, but not being
able to remember everything. I should know because I have done the job, too.
This problem is at least partially solved by putting the lexicon into writing.
Unfortunately, as we both know, BrickLink has not prioritized catalog development
in nearly 15 years. The high workload you complain about is not your fault,
but the fault of a website that has repeatedly failed to perfect its core offering
before branching out into other ventures.
I know we have disagreed in the past, but I do not have any problems with you
or any other CAs. If criticism could or should be inferred, it is toward BrickLink
only. I made plenty of mistakes as an administrator and I have faced criticism
for those mistakes.
Having said that, it is apparent that you have a personal problem with me based
on multiple forum posts you've made. Your most recent sarcastic, profanity-laced,
and accusatory post makes that quite clear. This is not professional behavior,
even if it were in response to criticism. I respectfully ask that you allow
other administrators to interact with me in the future and that you refrain from
communicating with me further.

Actually, let me modify that somewhat harsh response. You should still have
my personal cell phone number from when we worked together. I welcome you to
reach out via text or phone call so that we can resolve our issues in private.
I'd rather keep a good relationship than make an enemy.

I really don't know about this and don't understand the point of your
post. I thought it was very odd that you wanted to point out the corrections
but not submit them. We are always explaining how and encouraging new contributors
to submit info and corrections properly instead of just posting in the Forum.
Many of us submit corrections like this all the time when we find little misspellings
or similar keywords in use. I don't know why I would want to take the time
to go and submit changes for everything you found as well. I don't think
many BL people care about the catalog credits, but maybe do care to have a nice
catalog we all contribute to.
I know you are discouraged by the lack of focus and progress you see on the Catalog
side of things from BL. But I can easily see how your feelings come across as
critical of our admin. It think it's important to say that they are doing
a great job. They catch and fix my little errors all the time. I see their dedication
to improving things working with them every day.
Just my 2 cents...
~Jen

I am willing to concede the possibility that I was wrong since more than one
person saw my post the same way. Therefore, because intentions can be misconstrued,
I will try to refrain from posting catalog corrections in the forum in the future.
The way my post was perceived does not justify the response I received, but I
am willing to do my part to avoid future conflict. Thank you, Jen, for sharing

That may have been your original intent, but there are numerous statements in
that long post that come across as overly sarcastic and pointing fingers directly
at the admin team. How am I as a member of the admin team supposed to interpret
that without emotions?

terms used in the catalog. The problem isn't the lexicon, but not being
able to remember everything. I should know because I have done the job, too.
This problem is at least partially solved by putting the lexicon into writing.

I agree with everything you state here, but we just don't have the time to
document a lexicon that contains possibly hundreds of words with images and definitions.
| Unfortunately, as we both know, BrickLink has not prioritized catalog development
in nearly 15 years. The high workload you complain about is not your fault,
but the fault of a website that has repeatedly failed to perfect its core offering

Our disagreements were minor.
If you would like to criticize BrickLink, then please write a forum post that
addresses the BrickLink team in the office instead of just listing a bunch of
mistakes that are in the catalog. The BrickLink team in the office will not know
that you are being critical of them unless it is directed toward them and not
those of us who are trying our best to keep things reasonably neat and tidy for
the entire membership of BrickLink.

|
This is your emotions started to kick in now.
I have no personal problem with you other than the fact that I believe your criticisms
are misdirected and do affect the morale of the people trying to hold the fort
down. I am just the one that speaks up.

Or they simply weren’t native English speaker?
Translations don’t always follow language levels and one may pick the translation
that looks or sounds nearest to the words in one’s own language or one may pick
the translation that they know rather than a word they never met.
For instance, what’s common or even colloquial in French (épaulettes, tulle,
toque…) may be seen as litterary or specialized in English. Or vice versa: if
I look for a translation to “ventre,” the propositions are “belly” and “abdomen,”
and as “abdomen” also exists in French and is more a medical or biological term,
I’d pick “belly,” thus using a “lower-class word.”

At least, it’s how it’s presented on the Wiktionary. That may not yet be the
