| Last year, BrickLink decided to reclassify the Pearl Light Gray color as encompassing
both the lighter Pearl Light Gray (Cool Silver) parts that were made from 2006-2010
and the previous darker shade which was then grouped as "Flat Silver"
(131 Silver).
Since the new update, it has been very difficult to source the correct shade
of parts, which are differentiable and belong to specific sets, especially within
the Bionicle range. I believe it is time for BrickLink to reclassify the darker
shade into a new color so the community can list/purchase parts with greater
accuracy. Propositions for the 131 Silver color name could be something like
below, (or whatever the BrickLink team would find appropriate):
-Flat Pearl
-Medium Pearl Light Gray
-Pearl Medium Gray
BrickLink stated about a year ago: "Future: BrickLink will most likely introduce
a third silver color so that all three LEGO silver colors (131 Silver, 296 Cool
Silver, and 315 Silver Metallic) have a direct correlation to a BrickLink color.
The BrickLink color names may need to be updated to create harmony between them."
Can this be done?

Pearl Gold’s variations are within a single LEGO colour (297 Warm Gold) though,
unlike with the silvers.

This is an incorrect understanding of the issue.
Pearl Light Gray/131 Silver: 2000 - Summer of 2005,
Pearl Light Gray/296 Cool Silver: Summer of 2005 - Summer of 2006,
Pearl Light Gray/131 Silver: Summer of 2006 - End of 2010,
Flat Silver/315 Silver Metallic: Latter half of 2010 - Present.
The darker Bionicle parts are made of a plastic that gives them a darker appearance.
They are not Flat Silver and never were, regardless of how dark they look. 2005-2006
Pearl Light Gray is much lighter in appearance than the other Pearl Light Gray.
If the part only comes in sets in Pearl Light Gray, it does not exist in Flat
Silver, especially if the part was only in production up until 2009.
The lighter 2005-6 color is what needs to be separated from Pearl Light Gray.
It was only used within that time frame and for Exo-Force marbled robot torsos.
Even then, not every set from 2005 with Pearl Light Gray parts had this color.
I have attached a photo of the lighter (296) 2005-6 color. The 2x4 brick (131)
is the main Pearl Light Gray color.

Yes, it seems I may have misspoke about the name of cool silver, which refers
to the even lighter shade. While technically the darker and lighter shades of
131 Silver may be under the same name, I believe there is a need for the color
to be differentiated. I am not arguing that they should be placed back under
“Flat Silver”, they simply need a new color name so the Bionicle sets/parts produced
from 2000-2005 and 2006-2010 can be properly identified, listed, and distributed.
The current setup makes it very difficult find the correct parts. I would also
be for creating a new color for the 2005-2005 Cool Silver.

I would also like to see more progress, which most catalog and inventory admins
are on board with. We have tried to fix Light Pink and Rust before, but those
changes were met with immediate concerns about inventories and listings. After
427 days, I still don’t have an update from Russell about the plan with Rust.
If you’re curious about the arguments made against reasonable and simple progress,
read this post: https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1374565
I don’t think 296 Cool Silver is at the forefront of priorities right now, but
then again, I’m not sure what the site’s priorities are right now. Being a marketplace,
accuracy should be #1, but I’m sure there’s more going on behind the scenes.
Rebrickable, however, has made excellent progress in recent weeks with regard
to color splitting. They’ve just split Pearl Dark Gray into two different colors,
which is something BrickLink should have done 12 years ago.
Inventory issues would arise with a color like 296, as it and 131 share over
100 parts. The two pearl dark grays are much easier, as they only share about
20 parts.

| Agreed on differentiation. 👍
My suggestion would be “Pearl Light Silver” (296 Cool Silver / Pearl Light Gray),
“Pearl Medium Silver” (131 Silver / Pearl Light Gray), and “Pearl Silver” (315
Silver Metallic / Flat Silver). This better represents what LEGO has produced,
and is more descriptive of the shades and colours (PLG is a silver colour, but
the name does not contain the word “silver”!).
