As the newly named Ground Advantage is here, I have a few comments:
First, the name is so darn STOOPID on it own.
Second, with a name like "advantage" you might assume this to be a premium
service and that a lower tier of service exists below the "advantage"
level. But, this is NOT the case. Advantage is now the only service for parcels
aside from Priority Mail and PM Express.
Perhaps I am interpreting the use of the word "advantage" incorrectly.
It could be that the "advantage" is simply meant as a lower-priced service
than Priority Mail.
What I wanna know is how badly will delivery times degrade for "advantage"
parcels. Until now, First Class Parcels traveled at the same speed as Priority
Mail (for the most part, even when processed thru different sorting plants) and
most likely traveled mixed together. Priority Mail, since its introduction in
1991, has always been nothing more than a fancy name for First Class Parcels
heavier than 13 (now 15) ounces with similar or identical speed of delivery than
lower parcel post options that existed at the time.
We will have to wait and see if ground advantage parcels are gonna move slower
than they used to.
If slowdowns do occur, it may encourage the use of Priority Mail more often for
parcels under 16 ounces just to maintain traditional delivery times.

I wondered that too, and this info from shiptation doesn't fill me with confidence:
"Combined with longer transit time, the shipment will be handled more than
shipments that are sent through any of the air services offered by USPS. Be sure
to pack properly."
My guess about the "Advantage" part of the stupid name, is just marketing
to sound fancier than FedEx Ground or UPS Ground.

Maybe it seems that way, (and if it does that means things are going very smoothly)
but it is not how the USPS works.
I worked in a mail sorting center for a town of ~40K in college and Priority
packages absolutely got priority over others. We were instructed to sort the
Priority packages first. Only once we got all of them distributed to their proper
routes AND we finished sorting the flats (letters) could we start distributing
the non-priority packages.
If we didn't finish the ground/media etc. before the carriers went out, they
sat until the next day.

USPS Ground Advantage includes $100 of insurance independent of where the postage
was purchased.
As a way to control costs, USPS has been transitioning First Class packages away
from air shipment to ground shipment for the past year. The Ground Advantage
naming just makes it clear that "most" packages will now ship via trucks.
Think of it as a tradeoff of slightly slower shipping for "free" insurance.
For USPS this is a good business decision - include insurance (which is seldom
needed, but perceived as valuable) for cheaper shipping costs.

So, shipstation wants me to make decisions on a simple 4oz bubble mailer?
USPS are always making insignificant changes on the surface, to sneak in added
cost where you are not looking...

Ugh, my calculated shipping rates on ebay (which are retail, you can't change
it) are like $6.15 for a 4 oz item now.
Ship station is still showing first class as usual. Ebay made the switch this
morning.

not the correct option for light packages on Ebay with USPS Ground Advantage.
I just printed out a label for 4oz going to my zone 6 for $3.90.
Looks the same as before the change.

Yeah looks like they are still tweaking code. My ebay went back to first class
for a few hours last night. I'm guess they are taking things offline to work
on them
