Dear All

Recently, I bought a Sw0308 Saesee Tiin minifigure from set 7931. The minifigure
is in a really good condition with no loose body parts or cracks. I wanted to
change the white arms with dark brown ones however I've heard that dark brown
torso pieces from 2010's are usually fragile and easy to crack and I don't
want to crack the torso. Taking out the white arms won't be a problem but
placing the new arms is risky. What should I do ? Should I still remove and change
the arms or just leave it as it is ? Is there a safe way to change the arms without
breaking the torso ?

You risk breaking the torso taking the arms out and putting new ones in. The
new arms you put in might also be very loose. The only reason why you would
do this is if you had cracked arms already and wanted to replace them, otherwise
it is a very bad idea. You might try to purchase an armless torso and add more
modern dark brown arms to it. There are also similar older and more modern torsos
you could buy and use that might give you the look you want, though a lot of
them have a braid of hair.

I hadn't heard of this issue with dark brown in particular but definitely
reddish brown. But there is *always* a chance of cracking the torso *and* the
arms when removing them or replacing them. I would just leave it as is.

Me neither… until I found this quote not long ago:

“The LEGO Group has been working hard to address reported issues with reddish-brown
bricks becoming brittle and breaking under use. The issues have been identified
and we are happy to announce that they have been fixed. The fixes were put in
place earlier this year for the LEGO colors #154 (new-dark-red), #192 (reddish-brown)
and #308 (dark-brown). We waited until now to make the announcement, as
we wanted to be 100% certain all issues had been addressed and fixed. If you,
at any time, have a LEGO element which doesn’t live up to the standard you’d
expect from us – then please don’t hesitate to contact LEGO Customer Service
and we will send you replacement parts. We are terribly sorry for the inconveniences
this has caused our loyal LEGO Fans across the World.”

It's interesting to note that the blog post is from 2018.

If anyone wants a replacement 5 years later TLG might not be able to replace
them. The fact that the longer one waits making it more difficult to get replacements
also is stated in the article.

Cheers ...

Yes, dark brown can also be fragile. If you intend to go ahead with it, you
might want to practice your technique with a less expensive torso. If you haven't
done a lot of arm replacements in the past, there are certain techniques that
are 'safer'.

There is a video on YouTube that shows the removal of arms with a separator tool.
Since I watched that video, I have not broken the arms or cracked a torso. Putting
the arms back in is a tricky business though.

Good luck!
