I've recently come across the Lego starter train set 111, and I have questions.

The catalog says they inventory is 118 pieces, however the box I have shows 120
pieces. Have I done something wrong in looking it up? Or is my set somehow different?

You have the USA version which has a count of 120.

I’ve seen it elsewhere as 111-4 as opposed to 111-2 118 pieces shown on BL.

Set No: 111 Name: Starter Train Set without Motor
*
111-2 (Inv) Starter Train Set without Motor
118 Parts, 1966
Sets: Train: 4.5V

The inventory on BL may be wrong.  TakeABrick verified it from the instructions…
but maybe a couple parts were in there for alternate models or just for fun.

Note that Brickset got its inventories for 111-2 from Rebrickable and they say
there’s 123 parts.  So 3 or 5 more!

(The number 120 for 111-4 has no verification.)

If you’re confident your version is complete (sealed?), then you can fill requests
to change the BL inventory.

Thanks for that, hadn’t realised it hadn’t been verified.

By “has no verification,” I meant there’s no inventory on Brickset or Rebrickable
so they must have gone with the box and we don’t know the differences.

And if the box is the only difference, BL doesn’t separate the US/world entries.

I understand a bit more now. I would agree with the US version statement as there
is a sticker on the cover saying some parts were made in Denmark. The cover lists
120 pieces, there isn't really an instruction sheet, more of an idea book
included.

Take a look at the Alternate Items section. It shows 3 of each of these as alternate,
which makes it 120 total

Part No: 3176 Name: Plate, Modified 2 x 3 with Hole
*
3176 Plate, Modified 2 x 3 with Hole
Parts: Plate, Modified {Red}

Part No: 3176c01 Name: Plate, Modified 2 x 3 with Hole (Train Coupler Closed) with Hook
*
3176c01 Plate, Modified 2 x 3 with Hole (Train Coupler Closed) with Hook
Parts: Plate, Modified {Red}

After I confirmed the inventory by instructions I bought several versions of
this set, including the Samsonite version. The Instruction of the Samsonite version
shows how you can motorize this set with

Set No: 107 Name: 4.5V Reversible Power Unit (Motor)
*
107-3 (Inv) 4.5V Reversible Power Unit (Motor)
12 Parts, 1968
Sets: Samsonite: Model Maker: Traffic

If you do that you have one 3027 plate, 4 wheels and a few bricks left. The image
on the 111-2 Samsonite instructions show that you can create a 3th wagon with
these left overs, but you need a 3th 3176 and 3176c01 to attach this 3th wagon.

The non-Samsonite version of this set only shows 2 of each in the instructions
I have.

I added a note to the inventory. You can see this note at the bottom of the inventory
(button End).
