When we message a buyer about an order a copy goes through to the in house messaging
system and we can monitor the outbox to see if they read the message. Can Drive
Thru messages be sent this way too?

I have a buyer who must not be checking their junk/spam mail and hasn't said
a thing until yesterday when they sent me a message verifying if I had received
payment and if we were good to go. ... The package and drive thru message were
sent on Monday for Friday delivery.

They read (but did not respond to) questions I had prior to shipping, so I know
they are at least checking messages here. But it would be helpful to know if
they're reading everything, and the only way to do that is through the BL
messaging system.

don't think they can as they go directly to the email of the buyer and not
to their bricklink messages. some buyers will still message you regardless of
if you told them it was shipped or not

I'm inclined to vote "no," simply due to the fact that drive-thru
orders will clog the "outbox" unless BL can add a separate "drive
thru" folder in the messaging system to strictly keep them separate from
standard user-to-user communication, which would be ideal imo

I've got a sneaking suspicion they're going to ding me for poor communication
despite sending probably 3 emails, two messages through BL and a text.

Your job is to ship the order with the adequate quality and within an appropriate
delay.

Thats' it, that's all.

Send an e-mail or message when shipped, then file it - forget it.

Don't be like those sellers who check the tracking every week and then set
Received or Completed when they didn't have to

For what it's worth, I receive BrickLink messages to both my email and to
my BrickLink inbox, so I may have read the message without opening it on BrickLink
and thus changing the message status to "read".

Conversely, I suppose it's possible to open the message without actually
reading it.

In short, you can't really trust the message status to know whether the message
was actually read or not. I'm sure the buyer will not complain if the package
was shipped promptly and delivered on time.
