| Hody Bricklink,
I am trying to add USPS Priority Mail or Flat Rate Mail so I can sell sets.
I only ship within the US currently. I'd like to manually invoice these for
now until I get the hang of it, I need a bit of help.
1. Do most people use Priority Mail or Priority Mail Flat Rate? Seems like a
lot of bigger sets wont fit into the large flat rate boxes and I like the option
to use my own boxes but regular Priority Mail prices are nuts.
2. If I add weight bands to my shipping method but also choose manual invoice/
quote will the price in the band show up during chekout?
3. What happens if someone buys instant checkout parts and an invoiced set?
Thanks for your help!

All I can really comment on is your item 1.
As many sellers will tell you, flat rate is "usually" more expensive
that regular priority rate. Lego tends to be pretty light weight so the total
weight on an order most often can be sent in your own boxes for less than the
cost of using flat weight. One can also order free non-flat rate boxes from the
post office for those times when they make more sense.

Careful with using the flat rate boxes for non-flat rate shipping without covering
up the box. I've used the small boxes before but wrapped them in brown packaging
paper. Allegedly if you send something in the box for, say, $4 it'll get
flagged by their machines and they'll charge you for the difference to the
flat rate.
I haven't had that specifically happen but I tried a funky shaped box twice
with shipping through shipstation and I got emails for both saying I would be
charged more for the difference.

isn't it illegal to use the free boxes from USPS for anything other then
the shipping option the box is provided for?

I don't think you can use flat rate boxes for regular priority mail. With
the free supplies you have to use for its intended purpose.

They are free for use in Flat Rate shipping only. Using them for any purpose
outside of that is cheating the system.

That very well could be the case, but I've had counter clerks tell me to
black out or wrap the package in paper - on new and reused boxes - in order to
not be upcharged to the flat rate. This goes back to the early 00's. I'm
only regurgitating what they told me.

Priority Mail prices are generally cheaper than Flat Rate because it all depends
on the size of the package ( cubic dimensions) and the location of the buyer.
If they purchase instant checkout parts and pay and then a manually invoiced
set, you could ask them if they want them all shipped together - assuming you
can do so safely. otherwise if it were me, I would discount the invoiced set
shipping to provide a "combined shipping" for them. your only other option
is to ship separately. It is nicer if you can provide a combination price which
you can adjust in the manual invoice. Other sellers who sell sets & parts could
give better examples. As far as the price band, yes it shows up . I write in
the comment box for manual invoice that the prices are estimates only and they
need to wait for an invoice for order + shipping. You can take a look at how
I word things in my store - shipping options. I only sell parts and minifigs
, so I cannot really speak to the issue of selling parts and sets.

Didn't think of a combined rate, that's a good idea. I'll check out
your wording too. Thanks!

If I use Priority Mail I typically use my own boxes with the commercial Priority
Mail Cubic rates through Pirate Ship. Sometimes UPS Ground (also through Pirate
Ship) turns out to be cheaper and I use that instead. Flat rate isn't worth
it in most cases unless you're sending something heavy (and Lego are not
heavy).

Do you ever bother with FedEx or is it just UPS that is sometimes cheaper?

UPS is sometimes cheaper than USPS Priority Mail. I don't bother with FedEx
as I don't have a way of accessing commercial rates from them. The retail
UPS rate would never be cheaper.

If you have the set's "pkg type" set to MANUAL on your inventory
page...the buyer's full order (parts and sets) will need to be invoiced.

There's a global setting that needs to be enabled. Go to your store settings
and under the management section, check the box to enable weight and packing
dimension on items for sale.
Then, in your inventory, you'll see a drop-down menu that allows you to choose
whether the item is weight-bound, volume-bound, or manual only.
Only if all the items in the order are instant checkout compatible will the buyer
be able to check out using instant checkout. If even one item is manual only,
the buyer will be forced to request an invoice.
