2556-1 (Inv) Ferrari Formula 1 Racing Car
580 Parts, 1998
Sets: Model Team

The catalog states this to have been released in 1997. Most - but not all -
other reference sites have this date; some claim 1998.

The copyright date on the box and the instructions is 1998.

810005 (Inv) Collector's Guide 2nd Edition with Exclusive Key Chain

states it came out in 2000.

Does anyone know which (if any!) of these dates is correct?

I would say 1997 is wrong. If it says 1998 on both, the box and the instructions,
then it is 1998. Unfortunately, I can't verify it because I don't have
either at hand.
The year 2000 mentioned in the collecors guide is a result of the information
from TLC itself.
Both, 1998 and 2000, can be correct. From 1998, this set was available exclusively
from Shell and/or Ferrari as a promotional or sales set, and from 2000, LEGO
sold the remaining stock. However, this set does not appear anywhere in the dealer
catalogs from that time.
Perhaps someone knows more about it. I did buy my sets on Ebay until 2003.

I can at least confirm that the box, instructions, and sticker sheet all have
a 1998 copyright date. This is the type of situation where you'd think the
set would have appeared in a S@H catalog and not necessarily had been sold in
stores, but a quick leaf through didn't turn anything up there.

My set was bought in November of 2000 from a hobby and model shop if that helps.

Ah, that's interesting I know there are at least two other errors in
the guide (*), so I'm taking the '2000' date with a pinch of salt.

(*) Set 880 is missing entirely, and it gives a release date of 1987 for set
6750; in fact, this one turned up in 1986.

Yes, you are right. The 6750 set was launched in October 1986.

The Set 880 was classified by TLC as a service pack. That is why it is mentioned
in the collectors guide in the "Service Packs" on page 890 with set number
and year of release.

Interesting. The same table also lists the other Technic supplemental sets -
870, 871, 874-879 and so on - but these also appear in the main listings as sets.
I'm still going with 'mistake' here!

It could have been released as early as 1997, even if it has 1998 on the instructions
and box. Sets released early in the year will have been produced the year before.
There have been a few times I have bought sets in November/December that were
not meant to be released until January, with the new year's date on them.
Benny's Space Squad, for example, was available in November 2018 but is (c)
2019.

The Shell sets were promos and were obviously planned for 1998 but could have
been released early in some locations. Especially when other companies distribute
them, they don't always stick to the correct dates. When they have them,
they distribute them rather than pay to store them. Especially back then, I doubt
shelf dates were adhered to.

I have changed the year of release to 1998 based on the copyright year, a Lugnet
posting from 1999 and this set at Brickshelf that came with a 1998 catalog:
https://brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=435148

https://news.lugnet.com/market/auction/?n=876

Even if the set was already available in late 1997 (which would not be unusual
if the official release date was Jan 1, 1998), we would class it a 1998 release.
