Is there a way to type notes next to specific items within a placed order? I
know you can add an order note to an order but I do not see a way to add notes
to each item if needed. Maybe there is a quick work a round users have found
if this is not a BL setting? Any help would be appreciated! Thank you

You could try silly things like copy/paste the order in an excel... but really
I don't recommend it.
Download BrickStore free/open-source, Import your order, type anything in each
lot Remark or Comment fields.
Save locally on your PC, sort, filter, search
