I have a few designs that I want to submit to the designer program, but studio
is missing several bricks that I need. I had never used studio before. I have
always used LDD and LDRAW. But apparently all the submissions have to be a studio
file.

I downloaded the latest version of studio 2.23.1 (1) and imported a few LDD files
into it. It worked, but the design is missing a few very important pieces because
they are not available in Studio. Which is frustrating because they are available
in LDD and LDRAW

I left a post in the studio forum with the brick IDs 25380 and 24232 but I can't
imagine they will update the software before the submission deadline.

Can I still submit it without those pieces? I have pdf instructions, images,
everything I need to submit... but it will not look right in studio until those
bricks are added.

Help! What do I do?

First: there's a dedicated form for this: https://forum.bricklink.com/

Second, you can copy existing part from LDraw or even from the weekly new parts
not yet ready for use into Studio. For Windows, you need to go to this location
in Windows Explorer (Windows key + e) and go to this path: C:\Users\(YOUR USER
NAME)\AppData\Local\Stud.io and create a folder "CustomParts" and copy
the files *.dat in there. If there is any sub parts required, make a folder "s"
in the CustomParts folder and copy the sub parts in that one.

When you start Studio, assuming you did it right the drop down menu (see attached
picture) should show Custom Parts option with the new parts you wanted.

It's how I got the baby spacemen in Studio before they were ready: https://i.imgur.com/1aLYeI2.png
If only LEGO would release them in more colors so I could do real Every Space
Families is Awesome!!!

Forgot to mention AppData is hidden by default. Using Windows key, type in hidden
files and look for the option pictured below, click show settings, and click
on the dot to enable show hidden files, folders, and drives. Then you can easily
access the hidden Stud.io folder for adding new parts. Be sure to reset the
hidden setting if you don't want to see system folders and files or risk
accidentally messing with them

Thanks Wilykat,

I really appreciate your help! It appears however I misspoke... The part is
available in LDD and listed on Bricklink, but I don't see it in LDRAW (or
Studio). I also searched through some files on Github looking for the part ID
and I'm not having a lot of luck there either... But I'm new to this
so maybe I'm not looking in the right spot.

The parts are a dragon head and jaw. Actually, it says Creature, not dragon...
but it's from the ninjago dragon set 70612. The part IDs in LDD AND Bricklink
is 24232 and 25380.

What's up with that Github list??? Are those parts that have been designed...
but have not been officially added to LDraw or Studio??? I'm kind of confused
on this whole thing.

Ah I see what you mean. That 2 parts were only used in 1 set and that was about
6 years ago. If it's not available in LDraw or Studio, it means no one has
created the part data yet. LDD was maintained by LEGO before it was discontinued
a couple years ago so LEGO did produce the detail and made it available in LDD.
LDraw and all of its related programs were maintained by volunteers.

It may be possible to hack LDD and extract raw data for this 2 parts, then format
it for LDraw data form and post it in LDraw forum to get it checked and approved
for final release. AFAIK LDD were mostly encrypted so it'd be difficult
to extract it, it might be faster to create data from scratch. If you got a 3D
scanner, that would help a lot since it's odd shaped with lots of curves.

I was wondering if that was possible... to somehow extract it from LDD. But
I wouldn't know how to do it? Or how convert the code.

I don't have a 3d scanner. Is that how some of these new parts get added?
If I were to find a scanner somehow... What file type does the scan need to
be in to make it work for LDRAW (and studio)

Also... I downloaded the "part designer" app that goes along with Studio,
but it appears that creating parts like those are not really possible with that
software.

Also, I am getting a number of yellow exclamation points by certain parts in
studio. They show up on the list of parts (and steps) on the right side of the
studio app after I imported the LDD file. Some of them also say (needs work).
No idea what that means...

Most of these seem to be fairly common parts... Is this an issue with an older
LDD ID? The parts do show and are in the correct spot but its giving that yellow
warning indicator.

Should I just swap them out for the same part in studio?

2 possibilities:

1: Could be the part is not available in specific color? Far left side of Studio
at about mid point, look for Color Validator. Click on the part that shows up
and you should be able to see drop down menu with list of available color then
apply fix. You can ignore this part if you are strictly making digital moc and
not buying parts to build a real one.

2: you imported the project from LDD. Some parts sometimes don't translate
correctly and you would need to replace the part with yellow ! with same part
from Studio list.

As far as the Designer program goes... and the submission of this design...

would these 2 parts prevent my design from being considered? Since they are
discontinued parts? There are hundreds of them available on Bricklink...

Also what is the BDP Series 1 pallete all about. Are there only certain colors
we can use for the designs? Or... Is that just to make sure designs done in
Studio are using bricks in colors that are actually available? Which would make
sense...

I think the BDP part limitation is based on what LEGO is currently producing
so not all parts or colors can be offered. So no dragon head part for BDP sorry

If you are entering the current BrickLink Designer Program, then you cannot use
parts (or part colours) that are not in the BDP1 catalog.

The catalog consists of parts, based on predicted/expected Lego production for
at least the next year. Older, or historic parts from limited sets are not accessible
and won't be allowed or available in the BDP. You are going to have to look
at other parts, or create one from parts that are available in the BDP1 catalog.

However, if it's not for the recent contest, then you can of course use every
part available in Studio. Unfortunately, as you have discovered, not every Lego
part is available in Studio.

You just answered the question I just posted.

Those two parts would exclude my design... I thought that might be the case.

So.... I'm going to have to redesign the head. Damn

Here's the design I've been posting about... you guys can check it out
on my website.

Looks good. With your skills, I think you'd be able to create a brickbuilt
head that looks better than the one on there now.

Okay... last question (hopefully). I see where to select the BDP1 list of parts
in studio.
But can the software check a design that is already done and saved for parts
that are not included in the BDP1 list?

I have a bunch of designs already done in LDD (and LEOCAD) that I can import
into studio. I would rather not rebuild all of them in studio. It would be great
if there is some type of notification or error message indicating that one or
more parts in my design are not included in BDP1 list.

Is that the case? If so... where does it let me know?

and bye the way... thanks again for your help!

TBH, I don't know. The simplest way to find out is to try it!

If there's a part with a colour that's not in the catalog (including
BDP) a yellow exclamation mark is displayed on the Step List. Maybe it does something
similar with a part that's not in the BDP catalog.

Please let us know

Click it, it will warn you of invalid parts if any were present.
