I have found two different versions of

Part No: bb0047 Name: Windup Motor 1980s Key
*
bb0047 Windup Motor 1980s Key
Parts: Motor, Non-Electric

One has rectangular hole, one has star-shaped (8 points) hole. Of the 5 keys
in my possession, the two of the former are red, the three of the latter are
"rusty" red.

I have only one wind-up motor, and its key hole is rectangular. Both key types
work with it. Whether a motor with star-shaped hole is unknown to me.

Should the keys be split into to new parts?

/Jan

I think the top one is actually a square key that was placed onto a smaller square
than is in the motor and then rounded off. Four of the points are mostly square
and four are round. I've been a mechanic for 26 years and I've seen this
sort of thing a lot.

I see that now. Good eye!

Three out of five keys? And type consistent with the color nuance? I do not believe
you're right.

Looks like it is a variation to me, the one on the right in photo seems to be
in good condition and shows the starlike opening.

Yeah, they are molded like that all the way to the bottom, so the mold is definitely
intentional. I think a comparison image and an additional note are enough for
this. Would you please submit a nice comparison image, Jan?

Thanks,
Randy

That could be possible, but not all the way inside….

Looks intentionally made.

It looks intentional to me. It makes it easier to position the key.

And the hole is straight until the end in all sides.

Look intentional to me too, mainly because of the lead-in chamfer.
It's a double square socket.

Must be intentional.

I have 5 of these - one is red, and four 'rust'
The red one has a square hole.
All four rust have star shaped holes.

Never noticed that before.

Maybe when they changed the material, they also changed the mold?

I personally wouldnt make a new catalog entry, but add a comment/picture on the
existing one.

So your findings are consistent with mine. Rusty keys are double-squared, red
keys are single squared.

I just found a true red with double-squared hole today. So no consistency between
type and color.
