Usually when a new part appears in the catalog, and it is not shown to be in
any sets, the reason is that it's from a new set, and that set has not been
inventoried yet. Once the set with the new part has an inventory in the system,
we can see which set it is that contains the new part.
This 5X5 quarter dome part was added to the catalog in June.
It still does not show that it's in any inventoried sets. That seems like
quite a while for a part to exist in the catalog without a corresponding set
being shown to contain said part. Does anyone know where it comes from?

But no, I don't know where it's from, David. I do however, see parts
appear within the catalog without being attributed to an origin or N/A

Like you say, two printed versions of this part exist in a set. So, from a logical
standpoint, the unprinted catalog listing is there as the base for the piece
as unprinted.
At this point, the unprinted listing it is simply a placeholder.
For probably 99 percent of decorated parts, the unprinted part also exists in
sets usually appearing before any decorated versions.
Here is one of the few examples that come to mind where an unprinted version
does NOT exist, only deco versions:
My theory of the BL catalog needing a base part before having decorated versions
goes right out the window, however, when looking at stuff like Animals. There
are several decorated versions that exist and have catalog listings, yet they
have no unprinted base part catalog entry.
For example, there is no catalog entry for an unprinted Horse or an unprinted
Bear, only deco versions:

I found an all green one in a LEGO store's BAM. I was surprised to find
that although multiple printed versions has existed in the catalog for years,
there was no unprinted "placeholder" entry.
Of course, adding the unprinted tail to the catalog was simple; all I had to
do was use the base part number without a suffix.
It's not showing up there currently, but I suppose it could've been in
the system before. It does have a part color code, so maybe Paul8976 (the member
who added the part to the catalog) or Turez (the member who added the element
ID) know more.
It still does not show that it's in any inventoried sets.
This has been fixed. Actually I have been planning to add this "set" for quite
some time.
Tan and white 8x16 tiles need to be added to that pending inventory.
Thanks.
I'm far away from being a Pick a Brick expert, so it is well possible there
are more parts still missing. Once the inventory is approved, everyone is welcome
to submit any corrections.
