This post examines the current state of the BrickLink catalog. I do not intend
this as criticism toward anyone, but as constructive feedback. Management has
historically not responded well to feedback, despite sending out surveys asking
for it. I’d recommend a screenshot of this post if you want to retain it.

Several of my concerns involve long queues. Holding pending items or requests
open for years leads to hanging onto them for decades (speaking from experience
with this website). It is disrespectful to contributors and not good business.

For a couple of years the website handled pending catalog submissions quickly
and did not let queues stack up. This no longer appears to be the case. I understand
the site has been busy adding packaging dimensions, but there have been repeated
discussion forum posts asking why it takes so long to get things approved. I’m
sure there are reasons, but results are more important than reasons.

1. Inventory Change Requests – Good news here is that many of the hundreds
of pending change requests from the past have been handled. Bad news is that
120 requests remain open. The oldest is from February, 2020 (coming up on three
years).

2. Catalog Change Requests – These are being handled well. The oldest
is from June and there are only 28 pending.

3. Inventories Pending Approval – These are also in good chape. Only
9 inventories are pending, although the oldest is from January. Overall, the
site is doing well in keeping up with inventories of new sets – the situation
here is much improved within the last few years.

4. Images Pending Approval – There are 1,150 pending images, with the
oldest submitted in February. This is sub-optimal.

5. Items Pending Approval – There are 1,387 items that have not been handled.
The oldest is over a year old (August, 2021). The situation here is also sub-optimal.
Recent pending item queues are some of the longest I can recall from the last
20+ years.

6. Forum Catalog Requests – There are 68 open requests and the oldest
is from three years ago (October, 2019). Some of these are simple requests that
could be handled quickly. The handling of forum catalog requests is not optimal.

7. Catalog Help Pages – These appear to have been mostly abandoned. Little
to no updates or development has occurred in quite some time. Deleting unhelpful/unwanted/unneeded
pages from the Help section would be better than simply leaving these eyesores
around. The catalog Help section does not currently present a professional appearance
or user experience.

As just one example: a new item relationship (Gear that Belong Together) was
added around November, 2021. However, the Definitions help page for relationships
was never updated. The Help page still shows 18 relationships when there are
now 19.

8. Catalog Innovation – There are dozens (if not hundreds) of known issues
with the catalog. Very little catalog development has occurred during the past
couple years. I know from experience that plenty of assurances and promises
have been made during BrickLink’s history, yet many longstanding catalog issues
are still carried over faithfully from year to year. In terms of innovation,
it appears to be business as usual.

Additionally, I see that random efforts are still being made to standardize the
catalog (in areas such as item titles, for example). This is a rather fruitless
pursuit in the absence of written standards, which the site is apparently still
refusing to develop any further.

9. Random Thoughts – I noticed that the website recently made unannounced
changes to the capitalization of category titles (Duplo to DUPLO, for example).
I support this change and suggested it over a decade ago, although I was repeatedly
told by different people that the website would not be doing this. My concern
is that these changes are not uniform across the website and that written standards
for capitalization updates do not exist. Business as usual for BrickLink.

I’d also like to take a moment to mention again how unfortunate it was that BrickLink
erased hundreds of usernames of catalog contributors. That this was ever allowed
to happen speaks volumes about the level of respect BrickLink gives to its member
contributors.

Finally: I couldn’t talk about this because I was banned from the discussion
forum for a lengthy period, but I presented my first LEGO creation at a fan convention
this year! It was/is a collection of nearly all the wheels TLG has made from
the 1970s until now. The display consisted of 19 baseplates (48 x 48) with wheels
mounted to them. The display contained every color of each wheel, every mold
variant I could find, and every tire tread for each wheel.

I can honestly say I’m something of a LEGO wheel expert now. During this
project, I was unsurprised to see that the BrickLink catalog could use multiple
improvements in the wheels and tires sections.

Good read!
Already screenshooted just in case
I hadn’t heard of catalog submitters being deleted but that is very sad indeed.

I believe this happened because those members are not registered anymore and
didn’t give their express consent to have it shared & used by BL.
(No, having been a member and having made contributions in the past, before GDPR
and CCPA and such laws were in force, is not an express consent.)

I'm aware of the circumstances of the destruction of catalog contributor

I believe that question would best be answered by BrickLink management. Perhaps
they would also be willing to provide you with a list of options they considered

So, you are “aware of other options” but won’t share them because… no reasons.
Seems to me it’s just FUD.

I think the gist of the thought was that when you pointed out how unfairly BrickLink
acted toward catalog contributors of the past by wrongly erasing their names
when you said "how unfortunate it was that BrickLink erased hundreds of usernames
of catalog contributors. That this was ever allowed to happen speaks volumes
about the level of respect BrickLink gives to its member contributors".

That thought is understandable so I think SylvainLS was just trying to show that
there was a good reason why they removed the names and that it was simply because
they were trying to follow laws regarding the consent of the individuals that
had their names removed when he said "I believe this happened because those members
are not registered anymore and didn’t give their express consent to have it shared
& used by BL". But when you said that you were aware of the reason but still
disagreed because there were other options then SylvainLS just asked "what other
options?". I think the fact that were unwilling to share them showed kind of
a reaching for straws - at least that is what I got out of it. Just my thoughts
(which are usually way out in left field. Heck, my thoughts are usually not even
coherent enough to make it to the ballpark).

I do NOT give BrickLink consent to change my user name on my submissions or on
my Forum content without my permission even in the event of my death or deregistration.

There, now it's official! I am jennnifer, dammit, and I intend to stay that
way.

That would be really good to know for sure. Could you please point out to me
the relevant sections of the terms? A general perusal didn't come up with
anything substantial.

Thank you!

Hmm, good question.

Actually, I may have to rescind what I said in the case of deregistration.
I don’t see any provision about how deregistration works in the ToS or Privacy
Policy.

Disclaimers:
1. IANAL.
2. I will only talk about the GDPR (which I sometimes write in French: RGPD,
sorry, fingers memory) that’s only supposed to apply to EU residents.
And especially the “right of erasure”: https://gdpr.eu/article-17-right-to-be-forgotten/

(The Privacy Policy reflects that (that it applies only to EU residents) and
I find that a bit stupid: why not give everyone the same rights, even if the
local laws don’t force you to?  I mean, it’s only positive rights (“you can…
and we will…”), so they could apply it to everyone.  And they do the reverse
for negative rights: you need to be at least 18 or of adult age in your country,
whichever is older; they don’t say 25 years or whatever adult age is oldest in
all the world.)

So, within the GDPR, when a user:
— doesn’t agree to a change in the ToS (some changes may be ‘opt out’, the 2019
change on BL was ‘opt in’), which triggers their deregistration,
— or deregisters,
— or uses their “right of erasure” (= ask for it),
the website has to archive and then delete and anonymise the user’s personal
information.

What I was not sure about is whether deregistering meant you explicitely applied
your right of erasure.
But, if you deregister, then:
1. The site has no more lawful reasons to keep your data (which includes your
username).
And that triggers your right of erasure (point 1.a. in the link above) even
if you didn’t explicitely asked for it (point 1.c. in the link above).
2. That means you’re withdrawing your acceptance of the ToS.
And that triggers the erasure (point 1.b in the link above).

(Directly asking for erasure obviously implies your deregistration.)

So, even if you say “never forget me!”, deregistering means erasure means “forget
about me!”
As with last wills, it’s the ‘last-est’ that counts

Now, the deletion of some of the data may be postponed for some reasons (same
link, point 3):
a. freedom of expression and information,
b. a legal obligation,
c. public interest for public health,
d. archiving purposes in the public interest, scientific or historical research
purposes or statistical purposes,
e. legal claims.

a, b, c, and e clearly don’t apply to keeping your username for catalogue contributions.
d might apply but I don’t see any purpose that anonymisation would prevent.

So, TL;DR: sorry, if you deregister, you become a bloser

Colors, PCCs, and item dimensions have been the main focus for quite some time
now. A good chunk of the open requests are Glow in the Dark Opaque - Glow in
the Dark Trans requests that I was told would need some time to follow through
with. Apart from Rust and the obvious problem that color presents, much progress
has been made.

The newest PCCs have helped clean up pneumatic tubes and hoses quite well. These
IDs have also helped clean up some long-standing inventory errors in sets with
limited available information. Even Flat Silver has finally been cleaned up.

You have five open requests. There are four additional requests that involve
colors. This means that 13.3% of the open catalog requests in the discussion
forum involve color and 86.7% do not.

Well, good. I'm glad to hear that progress is occurring. It would be nice
if the public record of progress, which includes a project on colors, was being
maintained:

Sorry, that should say my* open requests. This includes 17 part requests within
a few sets and a few PCCs.

I was going to suggest revisiting that page this morning. Most of what I’ve done
here has involved rare colors and obscure sets with glaring errors. I believe
I’ve finished submitting all the requests for these parts.

In terms of inventory accuracy, the catalog is the best it has ever been. The
only thing I might never be able to figure out are all the PRIMO/DUPLO Bright
Green vs. Green parts. I’d also like to see 60s cars and 50s bricks be edited
in some way so that they don’t affect the timelines, but that doesn’t seem possible
at the moment.

Hello,

I'm very sorry that you were banned from our Forum. We need all the LEGO
experts we can get in our community!

I think it's really important to say that my experience as a submitter within
this past last year has been very, very positive. The current admins are kind,
knowledgeable, and productive. I never have a delay in working on any project
for new inventories. The inventory comparison tool and other updates have made
inventory work easier than ever.

Submissions for older catalog items understandably have a lower priority. I take
care with all submissions to be as accurate as possible, do the necessary research,
and give the admins as much documentation as I can. This reduces the amount of
time and work needed from them before approval. I have offered assistance to
anyone on the Forum who has questions or would like to improve their own catalog
submissions. Not everyone wants to do this or has the time to try, but the offer
is there!

Yes, there are many things about our catalog that are waiting for improvements.
Please do be careful when pointing out everything that is wrong that people may
not understand that the criticism would be unfairly focused on our current admin.

Thanks and take care,
Jen

Thank you for this feedback. As former administrators, I think we both know
that placing blame on current administrators would not be appropriate.

My apologies if anyone took my post this way. To be clear: I am absolutely certain
that any problems at BrickLink are above the level of CAs or IAs.

I worked daily with half of the current team and can personally attest to the
quality of their work. The other half seems to be doing just fine, as well.

I primarily make new catalog entries for old gear, coming up on 20 years old
stuff now. I currently have some new entries languishing in purgatory, so I am
curious what I can do to help the catalog admins when filling out these entries.
I always include weight, dimensions and photos, as well as as much information
I can in the comments.

Are we even allowed to submit forum catalog requests?

My simple request to add a single word to a couple of descriptions apparently
requires that I jump through hoops and submit a form? A straight yes/no answer
would have sufficed and so it does not surprise me that other requests in the
forum are left open/ignored!

Its not jumping through hoops to submit it the proper way its actually quite
easy. Its more difficult and more work for admins to just ask for things to be
changed when you don't do it the proper way. That forum is only for things
that cannot be changed the normal way and for everything else it works perfectly
as needed.

It is jumping through hoops if you don't routinely submit form requests!

Either way suggestions should be appreciated and acknowledged from wherever they
come, Dismissing them without giving a straight yes/no answer is just plain unhelpful
besides I prefer to put my requests to the forum to allow for open discussions.
If only one person is deciding whether a request is worthwhile or not how does
that benefit the community as a whole!?

Most small changes don't need the entire community to discuss them if its
as simple as you mentioned for adding 1 word to it then then admins will look
at it and decide if it would help or hinder to add the word and decide on that

Your still missing the point because a yes/no response would have sufficed but
apparently its easier to send me a paragraph and link on what I need to do without
giving any clear indication of whether my request is likely to be accepted or
not? As I say unhelpful, Hence I didn't bother!

That would imply that an admin always knows best and needn't listen to the
opinion of others? It does little harm to allow the community to chime in with
their own thoughts should they wish to!

The admins quite often do know best and no I'm not saying that people should
have other opinions for what needs to change but for minor changes, admins will
usually approve it as long as it isn't something bizarre so there usually
isn't any need to try to get others opinions on it especially since it would
create even more work for the admins who are already flooded with work 24/7

You make it sound like the forum has better things to discuss and so why should
I be surprised at the response from someone who's more interested in using
the forum to talk about pizza??

I think I'll leave it there...

Should I have started 369 threads one for every change I’ve submitted?

Bad obfuscating there: we all see the ‘5xx’ and ‘19’ and we can all know what
they are counting as we all have the same ‘My Activity’ page.

Oh and for the record I was once told by Randy and a past admin Jen in the below
thread that adding Frankenstein to these descriptions can't and won't
be done:-

https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1309974

Then shortly after that discussion the word Frankenstein was suddenly included
in the description and so had the request been made using the form with just
one admin looking at it I'm not so sure this change would have been made/accepted?

probably another user submitted it thru the forum and possibly a different admin
accepted it. or an admin saw it and stopped other important tasks they were doing
to update that

Good to see you back! You've been missed! Hard to believe it has been over
a year since your last post.

I’d also like to take a moment to mention again how unfortunate it was that BrickLink
erased hundreds of usernames of catalog contributors. That this was ever allowed
to happen speaks volumes about the level of respect BrickLink gives to its member
contributors.

Indeed, sad, if I were to put so much effort into this catalog, then lose credit,
I don't think I would be so inclined to do any submissions.

Finally: I couldn’t talk about this because I was banned from the discussion
forum for a lengthy period

but I presented my first LEGO creation at a fan convention
this year! It was/is a collection of nearly all the wheels TLG has made from
the 1970s until now. The display consisted of 19 baseplates (48 x 48) with wheels
mounted to them. The display contained every color of each wheel, every mold
variant I could find, and every tire tread for each wheel.

This thread is useless without pictures. Sounds awesome!

I can honestly say I’m something of a LEGO wheel expert now. During this
project, I was unsurprised to see that the BrickLink catalog could use multiple
improvements in the wheels and tires sections.

Sounds like you have your work cut out for you, then.

Okay, here are the pictures. Amassing this collection was difficult.
Rather proud of it.

The white lines demarcate families of wheels, meaning the tread and wheels fit
together. It was fun to display it a convention, but I had one gentleman ask
me if the wheels were 3D printed.

very impressive! Unfortunately it doesn't look like there are any pizza pattern
wheels

I completed the collection in March, 2022. So I don't have these - or any
new wheels or colors of wheels released post-March.

Thanks for the photos, it is an awesome collection!

I know that LEGO made a LOT of wheels and tires, but seeing it like this makes
that abstract knowledge more real. Amazing!
