Hi All,

I have a couple of clone and stormtroopers that are yellowing; because of this
I have put away almost anything that’s predominantly white.

What’s the best way of removing this if at all possible? I know about using peroxide
and uv light or sunlight but I am concerned this will remove the print from the
minifigures.
Thank you for your time.

You'll probably hear a lot of positive feedback about using peroxide/retrobrite
whatever, but that's because most people talk about the immediate effects
and not the long term.

There are videos on YouTube that can tell you more, but here's an image that
might interest/surprise you (admittedly it's a computer being shown, but
the same results occur in Lego too) -

As per the other reply - i've only ever heard of short term results with
the yellowing coming back as bad if not worse after a short period of time.

I fully agree to this - the yellowing comes back even worse despite the parts
being stored in darkness. And this goes as well for other colors that tend to
be yellowed - like LBG, medium blue, tan and bright pink just to mention the
worst colors to be yellowed after white. My conclusion is that yellowed parts
are destroyed for ever and should be tossed.

I agree with a previous poster, I toss them. It's not worth even keeping
them for fillers as every time I see one I get aggravated. Anyway, just recently
dismantled an original Gringotts bank to rebuild in a modular form and so many
of the white pieces were yellowed that I would up buying mostly new white pieces
for the updated build. It should be noted that these builds were not in the
sun, nor any light other than the occasional lamp as they were displayed in my
living room.

If your living room has windows it will still affect it. Last time I checked
windows don't block much UV light so it will still affect your bricks. also,
I've heard it can be a temperature thing.

We have windows, but they all have room darkening curtains and blinds and doors
are only open to go in and out. So, as little light as possible. It could be
temperature but honestly I suspect Lego could find a way to make these bricks
less susceptible to yellowing. Just like the reddish-brown bricks that I keep
breaking.

I use to try and whiten them back up with the regular process with the hydrogen
peroxide but as i have put it to tests the yellowing does tend to come back in
some cases sooner or later. So it seems like a temp fix.

It is a classic subject that has been going on for years. I searched for many
techniques to remove the yellowing. Peroxyde sounded great and works temporarily
on white and LBG mainly but, after a while, as described by many, all parts yellowed
to a brownish disgusting color.

The reason is that there is an additive to the ABS which works as a fire retardant.
This additive oxidizes and the light which is a catalyst speeds up the yellowing
process. Hence, if your model is stored in a cupboard, it may take longer to
get yellow.

Once you use peroxide, you are like etching the surface but at the same time
repolarizing the molecules, which become again sensitive to oxidation....this
is a cycle. I also noticed that parts became rough to build with. So they become
useless.

There is no solution to it unless you spray a nanofilm to stop oxidation without
altering properties of the LEGO parts OR you build yourself an airlock storage
room with no 02 inside (cheaper would be to store all parts in boxes and vacuum
out the oxygene). Once the bag of your new set is opened, there is no way back...

It is cheaper to buy new parts. I also noticed some parts in some model oxidize
differently. I have a Apollo Saturn model and some are still white and some yellow.

SO MY QUESTION IS: is LEGO not liable for this yellowing ? and should
they replace for free any parts within a limited time (guarantee)?

I've never heard of Lego guaranteeing that the parts they produce won't
change color. Even completely new parts have some variation.
