Why do German, Spanish, French, Italian, and Dutch get their own forum topics,
but English does not? English is one of the most widely spoken languages in the
world!

English is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world!

You've got ALL the others Forum Topics!!!

We're not interested in Sales, Catalog, Technical Problems, etc.
You can speak freely there.

Hmm, I’ve two somewhat contradicting answers and can’t choose between them:

1. The WHOLE site is in English!

2. No one speaks English but the Queen.  Everyone else speaks a dialect (natives)
or Globish (non-native).

But I agree there should ba a specific Topic "Garbage" (?) for bored people that
Suggest or Reply anything 'just because' - including Mods messages sometimes...

We could add also a special Nubs_Select one: named ""

It's French, so bin it and get some proper English mustard - you're tastebuds
and nasal passages will thank you for it!

On a side note, does anyone know where I can get a full English breakfast in
the states? I have been wanting to try one for years, but I cannot find a restaurant
with it on the menu. I guess I could make my own.

Who could trust the land of the Tesco meal deal and toast sandwiches? On taste?

Give me the hangover omelette, the hash browns, and the option to drink something
more than English breakfast tea

I can't say I have ever eaten a toast sandwich or even seen one on a menu.

Sausage, bacon, black pudding, fried mushrooms, tomatoes and eggs on the other
hand, available everywhere and tastes great but not so healthy.

Been forced to joke about bread butties, due to the British being immune to criticism
regarding crisp sandwiches.

Sounds amazing. Every time I have bacon and mushrooms, I feel like a fat Hobbit
princeling.

A certain paradox arises.

The Off Topic topic is for "Discussion about things that are not related to LEGO
or BrickLink."

This includes, for example, mustard, or video games.

So these topics are on-topic in the Off Topic topic, but off topic elsewhere.

But how can a discussion be on-topic if it is in the Off Topic topic? Posts in
the Off Topic topic are, by definition, off topic.

Easy! Just use one of the billion brick separator to get them into the new topic!

LOL I wish you could separate forum topics as easily as 1 x 2 plates.

Some creative uses for brick separators that I've seen over the years:

In all seriousness, I often wonder what is considered English. As far as I am
aware, English has no official governing body, so one could technically make
the argument that French and German are just dialects of English that have low
mutual intelligibility with each other and with other dialects such as British
English and American English. There's no clear distinction between different
dialects of the same language and entirely different languages.

As far as I am concerned, the only people who truly speak English are, well,
the English.

You’re just forgetting a lot of history!

Even if you only forget most of it, it’d actually be English that is a French
& German dialect
(French itself would be a dialect of Latin & Germanic.)

Linguists don’t always agree on where to put a hard limit between what is a language,
a dialect, or a local or even individual accent because it’s a continuum [1],
but they do globally agree on historical relationships [2].

As far as I am concerned, the only people who truly speak English are, well,
the English.

But who are the English?  The people living in England?  That is, not Wales,
Scotland, Northern Ireland.
But then, even there there’s different dialects and some argue¹ those are not
‘proper English.’
So exit Cornwall, Yorkshire, the Midlands….

Hence, why I said ‘but the Queen’: a joke that has a strong part of reality

¹ There’s lot of stupid things said here.  One I remember is some saying that
the way a Cockney said ‘paint’ wasn’t even a sound that was made in (their definition
of) English… totally forgetting that it’s how they themselves pronounce ‘pint.’

(My definition is: if two persons say ‘I speak X’ and can talk to each others,
then they both speak X.)

have no idea what they are talking about. The poor lad from India will have
to translate for the Canadian and the Aussie gent. The Jamaican dude will be

Heck, even two Brits cannot understand each other. Silly language, English.

Abd rumour has it she still speaks German behind closed doors!

Living here, no. More typically, it is applied to those that are born here. Unless
they are good at sports, then they can be English if their parents or grandparents
were English.

Hmm, I’ve two somewhat contradicting answers and can’t choose between them:

1. The WHOLE site is in English!

2. No one speaks English but the Queen.  Everyone else speaks a dialect (natives)
or Globish (non-native).

My HS phsics teacher always hammered the point. "It depends on your frame of
reference"

This applies to point 2.

Point 2 from my frame of reference:
2. I speak English. The queen speaks British English.

Never spoke to any Queen, I'm of the people.

BTW, while we're nowhere, just to announce we're cooked on Wednesday
(and anyway for the next 7/10 days...)

We're in the 36°C I guess, that means 100/109 F in reality

My balcony thermometer (in the shadow but not in a proper white wood box at 1.80m
above the ground…) said 44°C (111.2°F) an hour or so ago (slowly decreasing,
now at 41°C).

Happily, nights are cool (~18°C, ~65°F) or I wouldn’t even be able to open the
windows at night.  As it is, I only open them when outside is 1°C above inside…
at around 11pm!

Interesting, 100 and humid is pretty common for South Dakota summers. Can't
say I've seen 109.

Also, the state almost entirely resides between 43°N and 46°N latitude lines
which interests with Southern France. Kinda cool.

Humidity is below 25% (my outside sensor can’t measure it and says ‘LL%’).

So we’re dry-cooked, not steamed

European climate is interesting. London is north of the entire continental U.S.

I suppose the ocean currents and proximity to the ocean has a way bigger role
than latitudes.

Yep.

Latitude still has a meaning, but locally and in history, not as a comparison
continent to continent.  Everything is climbing North:  Spain begins to be like
Marocco, France = old Spain, and England will make Champagne in 2050.
(Not joking about wine: vendanges / harvest are a month early now, and the wine
is too sweet and thus is too alcoholized.)

And when I spoke about the Sahara, it’s because we got two unusual heat waves
in March and April because of the Sirocco (about one week each).  The snows were
browned with Saharian sand (which did help their smelting).

Yeah, I realize that climate is about more than just latitude, but it's interesting
to compare different continents. In North America, 50 degrees north latitude
will put you well into Canada; in Europe, you would still be in northern France
or southern England which is quite temperate. The largest cities in the Arctic
are all in Europe; there are very few large cities in Alaska or Northern Canada.

Yep! One of those where I typo'd so bad, that I spelled a different word
correctly.

We have the Gulf Stream on our West and the Mediterannean and a little thing
called Sahara on our South

Just a few grains of sand in that little thing to the south

We get hot-steamed summers and freeze dried winters.
A very typical year will range from -29C (-20F) to 38C (100+F)

I've actually been meaning to leave some rougher shape minfigs out on my
deck and document how/if the thermal cycles affected them. Could of had 7 years
of data already... oh well.

BTW, while we're nowhere, just to announce we're cooked on Wednesday

We're in the 36°C I guess, that means 100/109 F in reality

Take a look for the prediction down here in Spain:

And higher humidity for sure...

Dang. I realize that Spain is partly desert, but 50 °C is pretty hot.

We lived up to with 43/46° but 50°, you can't live; you just hide all day
long.

That looks just awful. Be sure to drink plenty of water and try to stay cool.
Remember the pets too.

And that’s in little wooden white boxes in an open area of mawned grass (well,
when there’s grass).
But I don’t know of anyone living in those little boxes

Hmm, Sergio, ‘bring’ the LEGO, don’t ‘send’ it first

Seriously though, from one that has spent years in deserts around the world:
Buck up just a little and embrace the heat, guys! I actually miss it some, now

I don't know what part of Washington you're from but a few years ago
I visited Seattle during summer and I found it to be quite hot and humid,
I don't know if that's typical or not

Why do German, Spanish, French, Italian, and Dutch get their own forum topics,
but English does not? English is one of the most widely spoken languages in the
world!

Another question would be why are German, Spanish, French, Italian and Dutch
language posts allowed in the regular topics and not get moved to the specific
language topics? There are specific topics for questions and discussion in these
languages, so anything not in the site language (English) should be posted there.
That way, anyone that cannot speak one or more of those languages can turn off
all posts made in one of those languages as they are not accessible to them.

A good solution for being able to ignore threads would be to have an ignore this
whole thread button. Sometimes I want to see what is in Sales or Suggestions
or Off Topic, but be able to hide individual threads from within those topics
when they get out of hand.

For example, this one is nothing to do with the Bricklink Catalog, but is posted
within the Catalog topic.

https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1350424

There should either be a way to report it as off topic (there is no such reason
in the problem centre) to have it moved or better still be allowed to hide it
and all replies at the click of a button. The only current way to hide it is
to hide all threads started by that user.

You can message any of the Mods as it gets to all if selected with the link to
the message if you feel it better suits topic X instead. The report does the
same, adds the link automatically and a copy of the post itself.

Ah yes. I've not used much French since high school.

I did have a French girlfriend once for a while. She tried to teach me to say
(to her) 'you have beautiful eyes' but my dodgy language skills meant
I kept saying 'you have two eyes'.

“T’as de beaux yeux, tu sais.” (You’ve beautiful eyes, you know.)
“Embrasse-moi.” (Kiss me.)

On the form: I’d write it “If you ever had one, you would know.”

On the substance: I don’t really get why the jab as it implies an answer that
is already in my question, thus invalidating your semi-question
